M103 power band not smooth
I'll ask guys-
This car warm or cold, if you go full throttle- it just doesn't seem to pull smoothly. It seems like maybe at times it timing or fuel is running lean. I'd describe it as "notchy". I put new injectors in it, no vacuum leaks. I read in the factory manual that early M103's could have loose crankshaft position sensor(at harmonic balancer) which can give erratic cold starts and should be replaced. Looking for diagnosis help instead of throwing parts at it. It's not horrible by any means- just not perfectly correct. I bet it runs better than 95% of the 300E's out there. |
It might also be the EHA not giving steady pressure to the fuel distributor. My 300E does this sometimes too.....power...less power....power.....etc. Annoying, but my wife usually drives the car and she drives so slow its not even noticeable. :D

I fixed it...
Bad voltage regulator. I suspect, low voltage was effecting the ETA valve. New regulator and vola- runs like a top again. M |
Thanks for updating us. I think my 103 motor has a similar symptom, but extremely faint, so that others riding in the car probably would never know it, but I do. Interestingly, I have it on my to-do list to look at the regulator brushes. Guess I'll do that sooner rather than later. Thanks.

drivability and the alternator
Quote:
The tensioner on my 103 engine went bad leading to a loose running serpentine belt . This broke the carbon bushes due to jerky running of the slipping alternator. Replacing the tensioner and the regulator had a remarkable difference in the engine performance . Smooth and very responsive engine mak 300se |
