Is it difficult to replace governor seal on transmission?

I asked this question before, but I did not quite get an answer. I seem to have a leak coming from the governor seal on my 1988 300E. It is near the back on the driver's side of the transmission. It is a round cover with a high poing in the middle that looks like a screwdriver would go in. Is there any springs or anything I should worry about before removing the clip that holds the cover in place? I borrowed a picture from www.transonline.com to help explain the part more clearly.

Thanks in advance.

Find the seal first. In my opinion, there would be no reason for anything to be behind the cover except the big nut shown in the photo. Otherwise, the photo would show it. Does the seal just install on that cover? I presume that you have to drain the transmission first. How much does that leak?

Steve,

The big nut is for the rear flange. The only thing holding the cover is a big snap ring. Remove the snap ring by using something flat like a small screwdriver insert it into that small cut on the bottom of round cover. Once you remove the snap ring the cover should come out easily by sticking a bigger screwdriver into the slot that you mentioned. You can turn a bit and pull out. There is no spring inside that you need to worry about. Once you change the big O-ring and place the cover, make sure that one end of the snap ring overlaps the cut for future removal.

Thank you for the help. I think I confused people with the picture. The last time I posted about it, people were concerned with the socket. Thanks alot.

I replaced the seal on my transmission. Thank for your help. When I put back on the cover, it seemed to slide all the way in quite easily. Is there a way to make sure it is in properly, or is it in if you can put the clip back in place? The reason why I am asking is it seems that the transmission is leaking worse. By the way, the old seal was dried out and brittle. I need to get under it tomorrow and make sure that the leak is coming from the governor cover.

Thanks,
Steve
