Accelerator pedel pushes back at me when floored!

A strange realization:

When I push the accelerator pedel to the floor on my 1991 300E the car accelerates - and as the engine gets into the higher RPMs - I found that the pedel seems to "push back" at me. -- almost like the car is telling me to - back off - !

I thought this was all in my mind -- BUT SURE ENOUGH -- after several trials -- I have found this to be true.

**** ANYONE out there EVER find this strange phenomenon to happen to them, in their Benz ??

-- Anyone know why this happens ??

At which point of the travel does it exactly happen? If you are talking about a small spring like feeling once the pedal is completely on the floor than this is normal. There is kick down switch at the bottom. Make sure that this switch is exposed thru the carpet. The carpet has an opening for the switch. I've seen many people put the carpet over it causing the pedal to feel very weird. Another thing that I have seen numerous times is the clip that anchors the pedal to the floor come completely off. This will also cause a weird feeling.
My suggestion is to take out the carpet check the anchoring of the pedal and switch operation. Reinstall carpet, paying attention to the opening in the carpet for the switch.

If this doesn't solve your problem you need to have your cable and linkage checked.

Thanks -- checked that -- but...

Thanks for the response Vin!

I checked the carpet and the entire pedel. They are in their correct positions - as you described above.

Perhaps it is, as you suggest, the linkage/cable. However, why might the linkage/cable increase the pedel resistance (following the contract with the kickdown point) when held "on-the floor" ??

Thanks again!
David

Just to be clear, could the feeling that you described be caused by the switch or does it happen before you hit the switch?
