W111 transmission box

Hello,

Does anybody know if a transmission box with article number 1112610501 belongs originally to a 220SE Coupe or 280SE Coupe? The same question I have for the rear axle housing with number 319804.

I hope somebody knows the answer!

Thanks,

Joost

Well I have both a 220SE coup and a 280SE coup. I can check the numbers for you. But I am fairly sure that your transmission number is for a 220SE. The gearing for the two cars is different, if your are trying to find out what gearing you have. In terms of the rear end, 220SE had drum brakes, while 280SE's had disks all around. also mostor all U.S. 220SE's had 4.10 gear ration (stamped on the left side of the differential. while 280SE's had a couple different ones but most had a 4.08. I hope this information is helpful.

Thanks, yes if you can check please. The car is imported from the US to The Netherlands with a M130.980 Engine from a 280SE. I would like to know if the gear and differential also belong to a 280SE. If not, i have to change them into 280SE versions, but then i need to know the appropriate numbers!

Thanks, Joost

Did you get my e-mail reply?

Hi Mike,

The last email i got from you was about RPM. Was very good info.

My cars runs about 100 Kph at 3000 RPM. Since my transmission is almost broken I need a "new" one anyway. I'd like it to match the 280SE engine. That's why i was asking about the article numbers. There are a lot of stories about different versions, size of the transmission box, etc.

Knowing this information I will also check the differential ratio.

Does you mileometer still point to the right speed when changing the rear end?

Thanks, Joost

I have both a automatic and a standard transmission that I'm willing to part with. The automatic is for a M130 engine. The standard I'm not sure about, might be for a 129 (250 engine) but should have the same gearing or very similar.

It sounds like you do have a 280 tranmission, the gearing for most of the 6 cylinder cars of that time where similar. So it most likly won't matter what you put in there. This would however be a good oprotunity to put something geared more to your liking.

The rear end change is a nice way to go. I wasn't sure at first but some friendly MB tech convinced me. The speedometer reads a little off but not much. I'm half deaf so the 2600 rpms or so, makes it much easier to have a conversation.

I think so too. I have the opportunity to buy the transmission and rear axle from a European 280S (W108), but I'm not sure if it all fits. Futher more, I like the idea of running 100 Kph at 2600 RPM!

Sorry about taking so long.
A 280 S Transmission will work just fine. It is geared a little different that a 280SE Coup but you really won't notice. a 280S has a 3.92 rear (euro spec). If you want to get a 3.25 you will need to find a U.S. spec 280SE 4.5. or if you want a 3.69 rear end you will need to find a 280SE 3.5 or 4.5 European spec.

the 3.25 will offer the best top end proforance, low rpm, high top speed.

the 3.69 will offer more bite at the low end with a little higher rpm at the high end.

either way, both are much better than a 3.92 or a 4.08. rear end.

All of these closed end rear axles will fit your coup with out any problems.

If you still would like the transmission #, it will take a few days I'm out of town.

Joost,
Also what is wrong with your current transmission? and is the differential in good working order or not?

And just so I have this straight:
You have a 220SE coup with an M130 (280SE engine)
and you should still have the 220SE rear end (4.10)
and your not sure what transmission.

All will work with what I told you before but I just wanted to be sure what you had.

Hello Mike,

The current transmission is making a lot of noise, fibration and I "shoots" out of the 4th gear unless I hold it there by hand. I still did not find out where the current transmission belongs to (#1112610501). I guess a 280, but which one? A 280SE or coupe? If it is from a 280, I could also have it fixed, but I'm not sure what the costs are.

The current rear-end is a 4.08.

Thanks again for your help.

Joost

Yea, you probably are best to replace it, a good used one isn't very costly. Coup and Sudan 280SE have the same transmission in it, unless special ordered. The 4.08 is an American 280SE rear end.
I'll get you the Transmissions # when I get back in town. If it were me, If I had a good 280 S transmission to use, I would do it!

Think about the rear axle change, I spent $300 dollars on one, and a friend and I put it in, took 3-4 hours. There is so much to benefit by doing it. Far less wear and tear on the engine, better mpg, much more quite running, even a little cooler running.

Negatives are, incorrect speedometer, and less bite at the low end.

I'll get you some Trans #'s later in the week.

I bought the transmission from the 280S. Now just hope it will fit!

The rear axle is going to be a bit more difficult. I have the old drum breaks so i need to replace them also with disc brakes. The 3.69 rear axle is very hard to get (i heard prices from $600 onwards).

Still alive here, got back in town. Then I started to play with a few problems with my 280SE Coup. took the plugs out, went to put them back in, I had a stripped plug! I was so mad!

Anyway, You will have no problem with a 280 S transmission I assume it is a 280 S transmission for an M130 engine, not the late 70's M110 engine. I'm sure you will do this, but just in case you don't think of it, you need to replace the throw out bearing and change out the clutch disk.

I paid $350 dollars for a 3.23 rear from a 280SE4.5 that was wrecked with 45,000 miles on it. That was compleat with brake calipers in all. There are many places over here that have them, even with shipping you might spend less. I am parting out a 220SE that hase a 3.23 in it as well, but I don't know when I'll I'll get to it, (most people want interior stuff). I would see how the transmission works out, keep looking. Let me know how it goes.

Still working on it. Might be very interesting to ship the rear axle in time. Let me know when you get to it! I have a small delay because the electrical fuel pump started leaking through the overflow valve. I have to fix this first before I can continue working on the transmission. A would like to replace it with a new pump, but they are extremely expensive down here. Do you know if I can use a modern alternative?

Greetings, Joost
