126 Model Insignias

Thanks for the reply 5banger.

Perhap I should have been more specific.

I see the Mercedes insignia in the middle of the panel held on by a single screw - no problem.

The "300 SD" and "Turbo Diesel" emblems appear to be a different matter. While the view to the back of the outer panel is obscured by the inner panel - the model identification emblems do not appear to be held on by screws.

I suspect that the emblem is pressed on from the front. I have
inserted a putty knife between the panel and emblem and pried
gently - and the emblem does not release as I expect it should.

Is this the proper method for removing these emblems -
or is there something I'm missing here?

My thanks in advance!

On my 1984 300SD the emblems are held on by three little studs on the backside of each. These studs have a press fit into nylon grommets that are pressed into the decklid sheetmetal. I used a plastic shim (used for squaring door frames in construction; available at Home Depot, etc.) to carefully pry the emblems off. The little grommets are commonly replaced when repainting since they're often buggered up. The dealer parts dept. should know them well, and it may help to get some first to see how they work and their size. (~$.75 ea)
The Golden Rule

1984 300SD (bought new, sold it in 1988, bought it back 13 yrs. later)
