Fuel filter changing - easy to do ?
 

Is it advisable to change the fuel filter myself? The local repair shop stated that my fuel filter seems to be the original one. Vehicle is a 95 C-280. No problems, They say that the hose is beginning to disintegrate. They also said that it might be safety issue & that I should have it replaced. There price is $226.00( parts & labor).


It looks simple - any thoughts would be appreciated.

On a scale of 1-10 for DIYer's, I'd give it a 1.5.

Replacing a hose and hose clamp & using a new crush washer if needed, is all there is.

OF course gas is flammable & can burn eyes & skin, be careful.

Change it!

My hose developed a crack and started to leak! Huge fire hazard. Changed it myself at a cost about $45 for the hose and filter. Not a difficult repair! There should be a DIY link in this or similar websites!

Doing this without reference to factory procedures is foolish.

Where would be the best place to get the parts that I need? Go I just get the filter & hoses from my local autoparts store - or order online from a MB parts. Also is there anything else I might need for this project?

No disrespect intended, but how experienced are you? There are many maintenance and repair procedures in which the only negative outcome is the car won't start, etc. Working on the brakes or fuel system has the potential to cause much bigger problems such as car won't stop or a fire. A fuel filter sounds easy but you need to take safety precautions such as clamping off the fuel lines to prevent spills. As pointed out, a proper WIS procedure will address this. I believe you can join the online WIS system for about $19(?) for one day and download/printout any procedures you are interested in. Or get the DVD mentioned. Nice to have if you intend to do your own maintenance and repairs.
