Get under the car and take a rubber mallet or something to the cats. See if they make a cool sound! If so....look into replacing them.

1991 300E - 212K and rising fast...

Sometimes the cats can be plugged from being melted solid. In that case the noise test may not tell you anything. Go ahead and do it anyway cause it may tell you what you need to know. But don't make the mistake of thinking they are fine if you don't hear anything cause they may still be plugged.

on my 280S with similar symtoms i had checked with a vacuum gauge and the reading indicated towards a blocked exhaust.

Well, I finally have an update. Things got busy for me and I've been driving the VW for a while. Today I finally got a chance to cut out the cats on the 400E. Yes, yes they were my problem! Power is fully restored! Also, the car now sounds like rolling thunder, with just straight pipes all the way back. Might have to put a muffler on there, but it's fun for now. Thanks guys.
