The week I changed my tires, (last November) I lost about 50 miles per tank, give or take a few. The temp. did not drop that week. Keep in mind these are studed winter tires. My point was that a less aggresive tred will lead to better mileage.

Precisely - there is a thing called ROLLING RESISTANCE. Tires DO matter and can make a big difference. Don't listen to those who say otherwise.

I find it hard to believe you lost ~20% fuel economy due to tread alone.
EDIT: After some searching...it's not even possible. You have another issue going on. Just coincidence. Tread can make no more than 5% difference in fuel economy according to an article on tirerack.

Hence is why 4-matic cars are thirstier, because of the added friction of a second differential, and power divided by 4..

Yes my snow tires caused a drop from 30 mpg to 26.But I will run them from now on,as I go off road to flea markets,and fishing.
