After I put in a new O2 sensor I noticed the best improvement. Then I tinkered with the Lambda adjustment which you have to do with the air housing cover in place due to the air flow mixture sensor. Have you done either of those? I have a 91 300E. It idles as good as I can expect although my daughters 88 300E runs much better with more miles!

And this "tuneup" consisted of replacing what?

It should consist of:

-distributor rotor and cap
-wires
-spark plugs
-air filter
-fuel filter
-belt

On mine I replaced the injectors too.

Ditto checking the mounts. Put it into reverse with your foot on the brake, see if the shaking changes.

New mounts can make a huge difference to shaking/vibration at idle and while stopped with engine running.

"Shaking" would likely not be motor mounts. A perfect running M103 does not shake.....

Yes, it does. Which is partly why they installed mounts. If you have ever had them replaced once they were worn, the difference is significant in terms of vibration at idle. With 195K on the clock who knows when they were last replaced.

Good reference thread on the issue - I Can't Believe How Smooth My Idle Is Now!!!

When people say their engine 'shakes' at idle, it's tough to know online if they mean it is not running smoothly, or if they are feeling excessive vibration through the chassis. Which is why - after the OP stated the engine has been tuned - mounts are usually a good second culprit. Easy to mistake the vibration from worn mounts for a rough-running engine.

With that age/mileage I would also check the injector seals.
