88 MB 300E is cutting off while driving

Hello again everyone,

This is what happens all of a sudden.

First while I am driving the engine will shut off. All the electrical items appear to work. I will turn the ignition and the car will start again, most of the times. Sometimes it will take 10 times before it starts.

Yesterday, when I was driving, I press the gas petal to pass another car and a complete loss of power occur. I press the petal to the floor but no power. It felt like it was in neutral because the engine rev, but no power. I had to stop. The engine was still running. I shut it off, and it took a jump start to started again. After that she drove fine for about 10 miles when, this time, the engine shut off while I was driving.

Does anybody have any idea what is happening?

It starts without any problem in the morning. It runs great, without any sputtering.

Battery is four months old.

Thank you for any help.

Thanks Hamish,

Thank you again,

click fastlane or partsshop or call phil at the number on the banner at the top of the screen.

You can find whatever parts you most likely need there, and have them shipped to your door.

The price should be very good and compared to the mercedes dealer should be a good savings.

Thank you Ashman, I will.

Actually I did a search trying to see if others had a similar problem, and now I am not so sure if replacing the Injection/Fuel relay will fix my problem. I have read a lot about the OV relay. So I am not sure. Maybe I need to replace both.

But my actual problem is the driving part. The car will simply cut off. It happens with me accelerating and also I test it with just coasting. I have no missfires, no rough idle, no hesitation, just simply cuts off. Trying to restart sometimes it will fire with the first try and sometimes like yesterday will not fire until somebody gave me a jump start. After that I drove it around for about 10 miles and then all of a sudden it cut off again. It started with the second try.

Any thoughts?

A couple of things to try:
Next time it will not start, lightly tap the OVP relay a couple of times with a screwdriver handle and re-try to start.
Also , check the fuse on top.
Because you are having this condition under load, I would also suspect the fuel filter.

Hello Arthur,

I had replaced the fuel filter about two years ago.

Two years can be a long time on a filter.
But I would look elsewhere.
As you had to jump it to stsrt. you may also want to check Battery voltage. Low bat. voltage will make the OVP act up.
A bat draw test is best.
Usually when the OVP acts up, the abs light comes on, but not always.

The Battery is four months old. I think I needed the jump because I was trying to start the car for more than 10 minutes and probably drop the voltage. No ABS light on.

I had the same problem with my 230 and as I said changing the injection relay fixed it ,the guy in the parts dept said that shift they a few so it is still worth considering!!
The OVP is cheaper and people seem to change it as almost a service item so I would change that first as you have nothing to loose. Also I have been told that if the fuse has gone not to replace it but to change the whole unit.
