Keys/lock cylinders
Hello, I have a new to me 1985 300sd and only got 1 key from the PO. I have searched, but cannot determine if there were 2 separate keys that originally came with the car. I am assuming that since the key I got does not fit the trunk or door lock cylinders that there is an unlock key and an ignition key. Is this correct? if not, it looks like I will need to replace some lock cylinders for all the woes that surround them. If for some chance I just did not get a trunk/door key, is there any way a dealer could cut a key to fit, given the VIN? Also, I have a metal card in the glove box with the original owner's name and some codes. Any chance this would have a key code?
Thanks in advance for any info. |
There is only one master key. It unlocks the doors and trunk, glove box and ignition.
The chances are, somebody before you replaced the ignition cylinder with a used one. You can't go to the dealer and get a key for it, they'll send you another "door" key. A new cylinder with a master key should be about $90 from the dealer. Dealers don't really cut keys based on other keys, they cut a shape based on the VIN. A locksmith can duplicate a key, albeit a worn one. I had a 240D that had this happen in the past. The lock cylinder was starting to go, so it was a no-brainer to have the cylinder replaced. After that point, just one key. :) |
