S320 brake parts questions.

for my 95 S320, I'm thinking about doing rotors and pads all around... I have leaking hoses on the rears, and a front warped rotor. Figured I might as well do them all. So, it's a questions of brands, as Fastlane doesn't ship to Canada. I can get these brands for parts. Which seems to be the best in terms of stopping power and longevity??
For front rotors: Brembo and OP Parts
For rear rotors: Balo and OP parts
For pads both front and rear: Mintex, Textar, and Pagid

I enjoy a car that will stop fast when it has to. But I drive mostly long distances on highways. When I get into the city, traffic can be pretty hectic with a lot of short and sudden stops. (I'll save my comments about people's driving here for another thread) I like being in the most complete control of the car that is possible... Yes, I"m a control freak...

I think stopping power and longevity are somewhat mutually exclusive. The brands mentioned are OEM suppliers so you should see about the same performance as when your car was new or if you had the dealer do the job.

Good luck.

I would opt for the Textar brake pads. As for brake rotors I buy them from our local MB dealer. You may want to shop around for the best price.

Brake dust is an indication of how effectively the brake pad performs. MB specifies a soft composition brake pad so that the brakes will function even if the power assist fails. A harder composition brake pad, that produces less dust, will also result in increased stopping distances at a given speed.

Ceramic pads (I like Akebono) create no dust and I'm almost positive that they stop the car better (I did all 4 corners, with new OE rotors) than stock material pads. But I could be wrong.....they definitely require some warm up time on cold days.....but performance is excellent.

Both John and Fred make valid points. But all brake pads produce dust. On some pads it is less visible.

Personally, I prefer to go the OEM route and clean up the dust once and a while.

I just did all four corners on my S420 and was surprised at how reasonable the prices at my local dealer were. Pads, rotors, and hoses were all within 5% - 10% of the internet retailers I checked. To me, it was worth the small premium to have them right away. If you need a caliper however, the dealer is definitely not the place to go since they only sell new ones, which are very expensive compared to a re-built unit from Phil!

Bob.

P.S. Don't forget to get new caliper bolts while you're at it. They are one-time-use items.

I checked the local dealer. Pads 129 for front 107 for the rear. Rotors are each for the front, and 86 a piece for the rears. Hoses were about 90 each for the front and 75 each for the back... I think I"m gunna order out of the US.... lol
