pwr. strng. fluid in brake resevoir--help please!!
1990 300E 3.0
In the process of bleeding the brakes, the one of us that was not under the car filled the main cylinder resevoir (from the slightly below the "min." mark to even with the "max" mark.) with ATF instead of brake fluid. The brakes were not applied at all when the ATF was in there and it was in there for about fifteen minutes while I tore apart the kitchen trying to find the baster I removed it with. The cd manual has me scared out of my freakin skull that I may have to replace everything but the kitchen sink. Just how screwed am I? Since there was still some brake fluid in the res, and the brakes were not applied, you could probably siphon off everything in the resevoir. Then remove the resevoir from the master cylinder and thouroughly clean it, be sure to replace the rubber grommets upon reassembly. While you have the resevoir off, you could also open the bleeder screws at each wheel and let the system gravity drain into appropriate recepticles.
Once back together, bleed the system and you should be good to go.

Who was not under the car?
Good luck and let us know how it turned out. Maybe you should buy one of those one man brake bleeders, that has a resivoir refiller, that way you won`t need the person who was not under the car. Good Luck, John |
