2.3 engine debacle

Looking for insight into problem with '85 230CE. (grey) its has the same engine as a '84 190E. (2.3) Yesterday 12/3 I was driving it , suddenly it started running rough and decided it wanted to stall, since then it wont start. It is getting fire, and when I disconnect the main fuel line that runs into the throttle body and turn the key (checking for fuel relay operation) it shoots fuel. I'm wondering if perhaps it could be a fuel pressure regulator malfunction? how can I check it? any ideas? Thanks! Dave primosoup@cfl.rr.com
