W124 auto-closing roof with remote
Hello, I like car electronics. I just installed a cheap keyless remote entry system in my w124 200E (1990) connecting it to a green wire on the vacuum pump. The system works great, but I want the sunroof to close automatically when I close the car with the remote.
I inspected the Convenience Control Unit (sometimes called Comfort Control Unit, it's located under rear seat, driver's side), I have 3 connectors: xC (sunroof), xD (doorlocks), xE (power). The 2 connectors xA and xB are for power windows, they're missing because I have got manual windows. I connected a timed relay to the remote entry system, it powers on for 8 seconds (the time needed to close the roof) and then it shuts off. I cut a wire on the Convenience Control Unit and connected the relay in a way that the motor receives +12V on the "close" pin. It works, but only with the key in "ACC" position or the door open! I'd like to bypass this block, leaving all other functions enabled. In other words, I'd like to close the sunroof with the door closed. I have several 12V relay at my disposal, so I can use them. Any advice? Thank you. |

If you use the central-locking system, it will close (and open) the windows and sunroof.

I don't think so, I connected the remote entry system to the vacuum pump only, not to the convenience control unit.
However, I think that if I bring a +12V line on Sunroof Motor pin #1 (power) I'll get it. I saw it on this page. Tomorrow I'll try. |

Does your car have the feature where you can command all windows and sunroof to close by holding the key in the door lock in the lock position? (referred to as convenience feature) If so, you can build a timer relay that is triggered by the remote. I did this for my cars.......I can provide schematics/details if you have this feature.

Never mind--you said you have manual windows.............

J.M.,
I would be interested in how you have your system setup. I just want a simple lock/unlock system that can also have the convenience control feature too. The one popular guy (Aussie) who was selling kits now only sells remote fobs with the stupid-a$$ flip out key, which just plain sucks. I just want a simple two/three button remote, and a system that can be installed cleanly, retain most of the stock features, etc.

If your car has the convenience feature:
When you hold the key in the door lock "lock" position, you are simply providing a ground to one of the inputs on the convenience control module. When you then hold the key in the unlock position to roll the windows down, you are again simply providing a ground to another input on the convenience control module. I built a timer system that provides grounds to these same inputs, and is triggered by the remote. The timer is based on the 555 chip and can be built from parts readily available at any electronics shop. I will warn you--this is an electronics tinkerer type of project--don't do it if you're into that kind of thing. Schematic and pictures attached--probably will require more explanation, but I'll wait and see if you are still interested. J. M. van Swaay

Ok, I finally solved auto-closing sunroof. My 26€ keyless entry module works great!
I soldered a wire on the "locking" relay located in the keyless entry module, at the coil pin, so I got an "aux output": +12V for 2 seconds when I lock the car. But 2 seconds are too short for the sunroof closing, so I installed a timed relay that powers up for 8 seconds. Then I found that this timed relay only has 1 contact. The sunroof needs +12V on 2 contacts to close. I had to add a last standard-type 12V relay for closing 2 contacts (close and power to sunroof motor). Now, when I close the car, the keyless module powers the timed relay, and this powers the last relay that gives +12V to the sunroof motor. It's great! I wanted to avoid direct connection to the sunroof motor connector, I should have grounded a wire on the Convenience Control Module, to emulate key in the hold-close position to close the sunroof. But I didn't find the correct one. Nevermind! Here is the schematics. Last edited by cheatman; 04-21-2010 at 08:06 PM. |
