Lost Key Help!

Hello out there!
Well I think I finally did it. I lost the only ignition key I had. 1990 420 SEL. does any one know what I'm looking at, besides being an idiot, cost wise. Is there a cheap way out of this? I heard that the dealer may be able to cut keys by the vin number.

Thanks

I'm pretty sure if you provide the VIN number and proof of ownership at the dealer, they have no problem cutting you a key. Well, for a price. :)

i've had a number of replacement keys made, extra ignition and valet for W126 300SD and 560SEL. about $10-12 per key at the dealer as I remember. not terribly expensive

The dealer will actually ORDER the key from Mercedes (ready to go), not cut it, by VIN. They will need some proof of ownership. Go in with the title and your drivers license. The price mentioned seems about right for a 126. Will be a day or two to get, comes from a MB key facility in NJ I believe.
(I'd order a couple so you will have a spare)

If your ignition is original and/or has a bit of slop, this might be a good time to order a new key and tumbler set from the dealer, by VIN, IIRC around $70 and will take a couple of days, a 15minute swap job if you have the right size pins to pop the cylinder.

I just got an ignition key made for a 1990 W126 coupe.

I had to show the original title and my drivers license for proof of ownership.

It cost $36 dollars but wouold have been cheaper by $10 at the LA dealer.

This was at the end of last week.

The dealer parts rep told me I was lucky I did not have to have the whole car rekeyed.

That would have cost $2,800 !!!!
