MB Coolant mixture
 

I went and bought MB coolant today.
I bought 3 liters (2 X 1.5L bottles).
Someone had told me it should be a yellow color, but the color is blue. Is this right?
Also, what is the concentration level?
ie, how many parts coolant to how many parts of distilled water?

And, what is the capacity of the E220 124?

Yes, the new MBs use blue coolant. Last coolant flush, my independent introduced me to it too. We had the same conversation. He tells me that both MB and BMW now use blue, although the yellow is still available. Standard mixture has been 50:50, meaning equal parts coolant and water. As for the coolant capacity on that vehicle, I'd refer you to the owner's manual or service manual.

Are you sure about the 1:1 mix? As this means I will only get 6 liters from the coolant.
I'll have a look in the owners manual the capacity of it. I heard it was 12 liters but not sure how true or not that is

As far as capacity, I don't have your car, but there is a big difference between the total capacity, and the amount you can drain out and replace. At least in my car there is. I don't know a way to drain everything out. I opened the block drain etc. So I doubt you will really need 12l. IMHO.

The trick is this:

1.) First, backflush the system...open all paths/orifices (to the heater core included), and backflush 'til the water is clear...

2.) Then drain everything you possibly can, remove hoses if you have to...

3.) Then appropriately reattach them (the hoses) and close all open orifices...

4.) Fill the system with clean water...

5.) Start the vehicle, let it come up to temperature, shut her down, and let her cool down

6.) Then drain everything again, following the above procedures (Only Steps 1-3) if you have to in order for a complete drain.

7.) Now, put in 50% of the system's CAPACITY of the MB Coolant. Straight. Not premixed. Straight. If the system's CAPACITY is 12 litres, then 6 litres of the MB Coolant goes in.

8.) THEN, you top off the rest of the system w/distilled water.

9.) Start the vehicle and run up to temperature. Shut it off and let her cool.

10.) Then, if you need to add anymore FLUID to the system, add ONLY the distilled water to the radiator neck.

11.) Put only the MB/Distilled Water mix (50/50) in the overflow reservoir.

If you need to use a "water wetter" substance, add it after "Step 7" and before you start "Step 8" for the full amount to be included in the refill/mix.

It's worked for me and everytime a mechanic checks the radiator mixture, 50/50 is the answer on the sheet.

The key is getting the proper capacity from someone who either knows it or directly from the operator's manual, if you still have it. If you can't trust the manual, ask someone who knows...

Remember, there's never a stupid question when it comes to taking care of your Benz, just stupid mistakes and smart@55es that take a perverse pride in their own knowledge and will ridicule anyone they believe to be beneath their level of competence. Ignore those bullies...they've made their own mistakes but are too proud to ever admit it. ;)

As for the mix, I thought the idea was to premix before putting it into the system?
Also, I am sure a 6 cylinder would have more coolant than my 4 cylinder.

A mechanic is doing it, and I asked him of the procedure and he did mention backflushing etc.

I have the original manual so I'll check that for capacity

So this new blue coolant... is it an OAT coolant? Is it the same as the blue stuff made by Pentosin? (Which is what VW used from sometime in the 80s until 1996)

M.B. coolant has the correct chemical composition to protect the aluminum, plastic and rubber components of the cooling system.

I used a red Hoat in my M103 for a few months. Flushed it out and changed it to original MB (Lemforder) Blue stuff.

The red HOAT "seemed" to weep out of connections. No problems with the Lemforder Blue.

Last year I suffered the Mercedes W124 broken radiator plastic neck problem. That's why I changed out the coolants in the first place. The red Hoat I installed and then later removed was claimed to be up top M.B. standards.

I just checked my owners manual.
And it said that the cooling system capacity is 8.5 liters.

So what do I do? Do I buy more MB Coolant? As I only have 3 liters, and with a 1:1 mix that's 6 liters, leaving me 2.5L shy (so, just short of a 3rd coolant bottle with the right mix of distilled water)

Well, if your mechanic is doing it, maybe there's nothing more for you to do but pay the bill. :)

My mechanic is doing it but I went and got the coolant from the Mercedes dealership.
So I still need to know how much to give to him

If he doesn't know, go somewhere else fast....
