Hello! Congrats on your 500E and upcoming project! I live in West Bloomfield and go to Ann Arbor quite often. I was also a U of M'er BTW.

Give me a call anytime. I have some insights and sources for 500E parts; especially engines and transmissions. I bought a 119 engine for my SEC last summer and installed it myself. My transmission is from a 500E (722.370) with kevlar bands in it. I have a slightly modified valve body for tighter shifts as well.

I'd love to hook up and talk some m119 shop talk with ya.

Hey Satish,

I, too, am in Ann Arbor, have a 92 500E, and would love to hook up with you and talk shop. I sent Pete an email a week or so ago and haven't heard from him yet, so maybe he's out of town. Zap me an email and maybe we can find some time to connect.

Yrs.,

Yes, that's my friend Tom in New York. I bought my M119 engine from him. He's up front and a class act. I highly recommend him. If you do contact him for anything, please mention that Satish from MB Coupes sent you.

hey Satish

Long time no hear from How's it going? I've been using your "transformation" pics as a means to shut up a whole lot of mechanics who tell my buddy that the engine will not fit with the 126! I've got a buddy that wants to do something similar to his 560 SEC and when he runs into that kind of talk from the techs, he comes to me and asks me to bring the pics I have in my own huge "benz stuff" binder showing your brilliant account of the "transformation" among other things

Anyway, I'd love to get your opinion on whether to try this with my "new" car.I just picked up an 88 560 SEL (against the wishes of my fiance') with a bit over 300k on her (I can't seem to find an SEC out here!) and it runs fine but love the "look" of that M119 engine in the bay over the stock. Would also like to find some resources to locate a decent M119 to transplant because if I don't find one within the next 3-4 months,I'll probably just let this SEL go and continue the 560 SEC search... Thanks

Well, as you from obvious pics, the M119 fits just fine, runs just fine and now with nearly 14,000 miles since conversion and some hard driving, I've got this thing down to factory perfect. You would think MB produced this car.

Anyhow, why don't you call me at home: (248) 737-4229. I'll chat with you regarding some of your options for your car and can throw some tuning advice your way if you'd like.

Appreciate it...I'll be bugging you soon! I'm also wondering what you ever did with the original 117 engine. My 86 560 SEL (218k) is doing just fine but I would really like to "beef up" the HP with her as well but not sure of how "workable" this 117 engine is...Do you or anyone know of any mods to get at least the 300hp the euros have if not more (I'm basically replacing all of my original sensors, valves, etc within the engine compartment for the heck of it to give it a more "new" engine look-I've replaced the old stuff and kept the original in the new part boxes if they're still in good shape just in case...) ? I actually love working on the 117 and it dresses up nicely with my steel hoses, etc. Whaddaya think?

Unfortunately, there's absolutely no cheap way to increase hp on the M117.968. You have to install 10:1 Euro pistons to get the 300hp. All other forms of modifications are pointless. First gear start on the transmissions make a nice addition. A 2.82 or 3.06 rear axle helps substancially as well.

An exchange Euro engine is around $6500 from Metrics with a 4yr/50K warranty.

I kinda figured that. What about any exhaust suggestions as far as a nice deep "throaty" sound? Does Metrics have a website (that's a pretty nice deal considering its a new engine-or is it- with such a warranty) or any info you could share to get in touch with them? Man, I always wondered how much of a b-tch it was to do all of that wiring for your car! The techs we show the photos to always say "he's crazy" and I always say "yea, maybe but so is the CAR"!

Did you ever do stuff like the timing chain, etc before you did the install (my buddy was wondering...I'm assuming you knew how many miles was on the transplant engine which probably wasn't enough to be concerned with it?) I'd love to at least get the 86 560 running off in 1st gear and get that euro engine...for now anyway.

Whatever happened with this? Did the car get up and running again?

My April 2002 issue of 'Mercedes Enthusiast' says:

'First seen in 32-valve form in the 500Sl and later in the S-Class, the 5.0-litre V8 had to be physically modified for duty in the 500E. Internally the deck height of the block was lowered to squeeze it under the bonnet with all its ancillaries in place and, to compensate for this and maintain the 85.0mm stroke, the 96.5mm diameter pistons were shortened and con-rod length altered to suit. A new, larger inlet manifold and LH-Jetronic fuel injection meant more torque than the SL with 365 lb/ft at 3,900 rpm while the power remained the same at 326bhp at 5,700 rpm.'

Which means not any old Mercedes V8 would've fitted into this car, true?

later!

It actually made 354ft/lbs not 365.

Still, the M119.9xx series engines are some of the best and most bulletproof engines that MB ever made.

Nice motor, nice car!
