What to look for on a 1998 C230 with high miles

Hello all,

I'm new to the forum. I've finally found a 1998 C230 with 150,000 miles. It is in very good condition and everything works (air, smooth shifting trans., engine sounds well). The vehicle is at a dealer and there isn't past service records for it.

What should I be concerned with on this vehicle? The price seems right at $3500. I am mechanically inclined and do all my own service.

Thanks to all for any information!

Given the miles and no service records I would pass on the car. There are lots of these cars around so you can afford to be picky. With that mileage I would be looking closely at the transmission. When the new electronic units came out it 1997 they had a few gremlins to sort out. A search will reveal more information.

From what I've read, the C230 from this vintage was a pretty reliable and carefree car. The M111 4-cylinder engine should provide good service without much hassle. I do know that the mass air flow sensors tend to fail often. Also, the electronic keys are expensive to repair if they break or need to be replaced. You may want to negotiate a lower price if there is only 1 key.

My only concern would be the no records. You might be able to find the dealer records somehow. Mercedes dealers are usually pretty good about this. There have been other threads on this subject. Obviously it depends a lot on how it was cared for. Also the area it was driven in. And was it in a flood? Hopefully not... Mine is near 200K and no major issues yet. Still burns no oil. That price seems good as long as there isn't some hidden "surprise". Original owner cars are always preferable of course, or second owner with records.

If you ask them to lookup the service history for a particular VIN, does it only apply to that particular dealership or work that's been done at any MBZ dealer?

I got no records with my car. :)

Don't quote me on this but from what I've read before, I believe you have to go to the servicing dealer to get servicing records. Recalls and work performed on warranty can be obtained at any dealer. Most dealers up here won't release service records to someone who didn't pay for them citing "privacy laws".

Good little engine to m111. I have one in an E230. Very reliable and as one other said - MAF's were a common failiure.

Also if it has a 722.6 transmission, I would be concerned at that mileage.

Mine had 144 000 km on it when purchased, and as per mercedes service reccomendations, the fluid had never been changed. I got it done because of peace of mind. It was filthy. I only did a fluid change, but I will do filter and oil soon.

Some sort of history would be preferable - otherwise its a lottery.
