Look what I found in my transmission

I started anohter thread because my transmission was slipping on a 1993 300SD. (I just bought the car, knowing there was trans issues)

Changed the transmission fluid and filter (Lucked into 8 quarts of Quaker state trans fluid for $1/quart) But when I pulled the pan it was full of this black dusty gunk (clutch) and what looks like what used to be a spring.

btw, the transmission works better than before changing the filter/fluid.

On a side note, the speedo doesn't work, I'm now wondering if the metal wire has to do with the speedometer, as I have all gears.

On a side side note, anyone know how fast a 1993 300SD is moving at 2500 RPM in 4th gear?

Should be about 75 mph if its like my friends wagon. My 400E is doing 80 but Im sure being a V8 has something to do with the tranny and gear difference.

That's not a good sign for the longevity of that particular transmission....

Yeah, I don't plan on taking the car on any long trips.

The long piece at the top of the picture measures 4 cm. It's about the diameter of a paper clip, but it's unbelievable strong, to the point that I CANNOT bend it by hand. And I guess it is ferrous, because it's relative position is influenced by magnetism. The total length that I measured for the paper clip thickness material is about 17 cm

Lost Reverse today, hoping another trans flush might bring it back. The car shifted great for a couple days (all things considered) Then I started getting on it a little harder, now no reverse and trans is acting up.

Checked the trans fluid and it appears to be way over-full, but I wasn't on level ground, and there was some debris (dust) on the stick, maybe all the dirt that was circulating got trapped in the filter and clogged it up?

Reverse usually never comes back once it has left. 3-4 days of driving before it all goes wrong..... sounds about right with the pictured chunks.

You MUST be on level ground AND have the engine running to properly check the fluid level.

Either way your reverse is toast...Time for a rebuild!

I bet those bits are from the reverse brake springs springs. Good news is the reverse gear parts are right under the cover. Bad news is the trans has to come out to get at them.

At 2500 RPM my 91 350SDL is doing about 50 mph. 60 is just over that, 70 is 3,0000 and 80 is 3500.

your 91 350SDL is a W126 chassis, right? This is a W140

I feel sorry for you, really. That tranny looks like a real goner.

The question is how you are going to deal with it....

New clutch discs and springs, and the tranny may be like new again. We've brought many back to life. He needs to quit driving it RIGHT NOW, and get it worked on before more damage is done.
