AMG or not?

Sorry for double thread but I need to get to the bottom of this due to a car I am interested in.

Can anyone pls shed light on this.

How do you tell an AMG 500 series from an ordinary Benz?

There are 3 here for sale in Aussie. 2 are touted as an AMG hybrid. More specifically. They are 500SEC's with a 560 5.6L engine fitted. However. 1 is badged a 560SEC?

I ran the VIN's through the Russian site & got squat! What I did get however was the transmission codes for the 500's was 722.311 whilst for the 560 it was 722.350. Does this mean anything

Really would appreciate the facts

P.S. 1 of the 500SEC badged owners wrote back to me:

It has AMG tailshaft, wheels, exhaust, door trim "leopard on merc symbol" with Hybrid logo and on top of that we have had it to a merc mechanic (Mr Benz) and they have confirmed the "hybrid" we have is an AMG.. The person we bought it off, bought it off his boss which had imported it as an AMG merc. It is set up to go fast and handle well, it kicks back easily at 180 and will keep pulling (not that we advise you do that...) If you hold foot flat top gear isnt reached until 200 (but as I put in advert, rear suspension does need redoing). As soon as you start it you will understand, the note is unlike any standard merc around. Husband has had a stroke which is why we are selling it... Cheers

hmmmmmm...............

Would try to contact D-B directly and ask them if they know who holds the records from the old AMG and if whoever holds the old records can check to see if it is an AMG. If AMG didn't do it, then someone just modded the car themselves. If there is no proof of any of this, then I'd say there is no lineage to AMG and car isn't all that valuable.

Unless they have documentation showing work done by AMG, there are few facts to be had. Do all 3 have 560 engines? If so, it seems very unlikely someone would transplant a Gen II AMG spec engine - into a Gen I body, obliterating the provenance of the car.

This would indicate that tranny came out of a '89 - '91 MY 560.

Sounds like you's need to contact that mechanic to find out how he came to that conclusion ? Did he pull the valve covers to see if it had hydraulic or solid lifters ? I have no clue what is meant by "leopard on merc symbol", but if by "Hybrid logo" they refer to the ///AMG logo, it's a sure bet it was NOT added on any official basis. Without documentation, nor even any photos showing that particular car's exhaust, wheels, etc., you can't expect much in the way of facts - only speculation.
e.g., not an AMG 'hybrid' - wrong logo for that era :
