Anyone install a 500E gas tank in the 300E?
I have an opportunity to get one and like the idea of a higher capacity with longer range. Are the gas level sender & gauge the same?
|
should be. i was planning on this mod for my 300ce
|
what is the size difference?
|
I wasn't able to find the gas tank capacity of a 500E, someone who can whip out their user manual would be the more likely candidate for this info.
I'd imagine that there is at least a ~3-4 GAL gain from this mod. But wouldn't you lose a few inches of trunk space? |
Fuel tank difference
I recall thinking about this awhile back. However, I was thinking about the larger 300D Diesel fuel tank which was 20 litres (approx 5 USG) larger.
Would the 500E use the same tank and therefore the same capacity difference? Are there mounting differences? I have no idea - sorry I can't help more. I have no idea of the work involved but I let go of the idea because of competing priorities. Cheers, Paul |
Large tank option ...
The W124 could be specified with a higher capacity tank. Mine has this option and is, I think, 90 litres.
Maybe the 500 had that as standard? All the best. RayH |
The size of the tank is larger but fits in the same area as the 400E as the trunk carpet is the same for both. It should not change anything in that respect.
|
If these are correct, difference is just over 5 gal increase:
300E: 18.5 gal 500E: 23.8 gal yes, the tank would consume more into the trunk area |
Standard tank in the '95 E300 diesel (the larger one).

I mean, ive noticed a difference but i guess never looked at any others... i'd like to do that in the 300D (if i end up keeping it) |
The 500E/E500 and the '95 E300D were equipped with standard 90 liter tanks. That is 23.77 gallons. I believe that these were the only 124's to come standard with this tank.
