87 300e W124 Sunroof Level Adjustment

Hope someone can give me some clues about how to adjust this problem. My sunroof works fine except the front corner on the left side is about 3mm down in the shut position(in other words it`s not flat with the roof line), i`m shure this is causing a bit of wind noise at speed, can this be adjusted out to raise that corner 3mm so all will be level with the roof. i`ve had a look for some sort of adjustment screws but can`nt work out which one will do the job. (pictures would be nice if anyone has the knowledge and time) Thanks in advance Georeghifi!

Please, somebody out there must have the same problem, i`ve seen 2 Mercs on the road with the same problem.

Had the same problem. It turned out to be the cross member that actuates the raising mechanisms. The cross member piece had actually bent in the middle. It had flexed so many times that the metal was cracking and it lost strength and would bend and not raise the corners of the roof. The cable pushes in the center of the cross member and it bends in the middle. Eventually it bends and then cracks and starts flexing.

Fully raise the roof and look at the leading edge of the cross member. It it is not straight then you have the same problem as I had. I repaired mine by first straightening it out, then filling it with molten lead to act as a stiffener. It worked good. I was working on it during the weekend and didnt feel like waiting to get a new part. But I would not recommend you do what I did.

Yeah, thanks Dave, had a look at my cross member but it`s o.k., somehow i think i`ve got to raise the the chrome running rail at that point, any one else have any expirence at doing this, help would be much appriecated

Ok then try this. As I remember, when I had the thing apart, there was some nuts that attach the front of the roof to the sliding pieces. I rmeember having to reset them a number of times to get the height to match. You have to remove the headliner under the roof to access them. Have you done that? Do you know how to do that ?

Heres how. Open the roof about almost all the way. Then using a large flat screwdriver pop out the leading edge faterners. They just pop out. Then slide the headliner forward and out. Then close the roof and look near the front sides and you will see at least two nuts that hold the roof in place. Loosten them and make your adjustment. I believe this proceedure is on the CD roms for the car.

Let me know if you need clarification.

Thanks that sounds more like it Dave . I`ll attempt it next weekend when i`ve got plenty of time and the missus is`nt nagging me to do something else. You all know how it is, and always will be!

w124 sunroof doesnt close flush with roof

Any suggestions for how to get the back of the sunroof on my '87 300e to come all the way up. It stops about 3/8ths of an inch below the roofline. Thanks for your help.

I would suggest that the cross member is bending and needs to be replaced, or the actuator cable is out adjustment. The cable is adjusted at the motor mechanism in the trunk. I doubt that is where your problem is. Re-read the third post in this thread.
