Car shuts off while driving!

every once in a while when i am driving my car loses all power and all the lights on the dash turn on and i have to turn the key off and then restart the car. 3this isn't even limited to stopping at a stop light or stop sign, but while my foot is on the gas! alternator was replaced 6/19/08, but was a bad alternator installed by mechanic and he installed a new one on 12/29/08. any suggestions guys? thanks.

Fuel pump, fuel pump relay, crank sensor, or coil.

If it happens at less than 20mph, OVP.

yes, it is at less than 20, plus I was looking at my record and it was recommended that I have it replaced about 2 years ago. I'll get one ordered

I'm 95% sure its your OVP then. I've never experienced an OVP issue while the car is under acceleration above 20mph. It always stalls when cruising or braking coming to a stop at a light for instance.

Should be an easy swap. It may also explain any other odd running conditions too if you have any.

I've ran into the stalling issue on both my cars. (I got my wagon cheap for this exact ISSUE LOL, no kidding. PO just couldn't seem to figure out why it was stalling and with a newborn, he didn't feel safe). I browsed this forum and found said holy grail ovp and it instantly fixed it.

With my 260E a few years later, I came with an OVP in hand ready at purchase location as I saw the ABS was on. Instantly fixed that on the spot.

would it also explain low gas mileage or problems with starting?

If the OVP is failing intermittently, your system could be going into open loop...so it's definitely a possibility.
