Replacement sealed beam headlights for w124...
Hey guys, my front right headlight just fused on my 1992 W124. It has the stupid american sealed-beam lights. My question is, do I have to buy a new light from Mercedes? Or can I go to pep boys and get a replacement? I really want something that is a bit brighter and bluer. I can't get Euros, cause my dad almost fell outta his chair when I said I was going to buy $500 headlights. Thanks. (A quick response would be nice, my dad is waiting to go and pick up the lights...)

Those aren't sealed beams. Sealed beams won't fit - wrong size and shape, nothing to mount them on! They are an expensive (but crummy) US only light which, on my 87 w124, used a 9004 bulb. I don't know if the 9004 bulb was still being used in 1992, but both the US headlights and the Euros use bulbs that are replaced from the rear of the assembly by removing a plastic cover. Replacing the US lights is nearly as expensive as buying Euros, so don't break one by running a way overwattage bulb!
If you scroll down page 3 of this thread, http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?threadid=27619&perpage=15&pagenumber=3 , you will see what the inside of the Euro headlight looks like, and the spring clip holding the bulb in the headlight reflector (right side) and fog light reflector (left). The US works in a like manner, but with different connectors.

Don't feel bad - it is pretty well hidden, weather proofed, out of site, etc. If you are used to sealed beams and haven't looked it up in the MB manual, it looks like a sealed beam.

Hey, alright, so I got the 9004 light bulb out, but I have 1 last question. Anyone know what the low/high watts are for this bulb? I don't have a manual for the car... so I can't exactly find out... Thanks.
edit: Ummm... never mind, I ran a search for 45/65, the wattage I was assuming the lights would be, and I turned out to be correct... Last edited by Badinfo; 12-15-2001 at 08:09 PM. |

Has anyone out there tried using the 9004-105 H-5 55 or 80-watt bulbs in an early 300E? (Any melted wiring?)
I was intrigued by John Elliott's installation, but don't have the inclination to do an install on my own. If these bulbs might be helpful, I'll try them. However, I am a little concerned about hotter bulbs. On the other hand, I need more light. I'm feeling bad about killing a dog on a country road two nights ago. I'd just switched from high-beams to lows for an oncoming car, passed the car and before I switched back, hit the dog. The lights on these cars are pretty bad.

I have used some 80/100w in my car on my 1992 in the 9004 bulb size.
I still have them. The lights were brighter, and not that much over the stock 55w bulbs. I figured better to be safe and not risk melting anything so I went back to stock. Alon

Hey, has anyone gotten these tigris lights? What is their fit and finish like? The front end of my car got pretty severly damaged, and it needs new lights and a new hood. Should I get these lights or pull for OE units?

I switched to the Sylvania halogen xtra-vision bulbs in my 1988 300E and noticed a big improvement from the standard lights. The wattage is 65/45 and should not tax your eletrical system at all. This is a good alternative if you want to be safe and do not want to switch to the euro system........just my .02

Yea, I did that also except with philips super blues, they were definetaly better. However, the front end of my car got totaled, so I need new headlight assemblies, and I figure if I can get these euros for 300 bucks shipped, I will have money left over for some clear corners....
