300e Speedo dial removal
ok, here's the deal:
ive removed the insturment cluster doing all the the things that one must do, like disonnect the sppedo cable and im looking at the the actual speedometer instrument component, removed from the insturment cluster, as my odometer is not working and wish to fix it. ok, in order to frig with the cogs, you have to take the metal facia with all the speed numbers on them; thats fine except i cant get the actual dial itself (the orange thingy, the "hand") off the spindle. im afraid that if i f**k with it too much it will break and they look real fragile; any tips or experiences with how to get this thing off real easy like? fd/ |

Had the same problem

I had the same problem, I managed to fix it without removing the dials. I started disassembling the actual speedo from behind, removing the cover for the drive cog (where the cable attaches) and then removing the screw gear. When this was done I discovered that the first cog on the odometer (fraction of miles) was slipping when it had to roll from 9 to 10 (It gets loaded by needing to turn the subsequent number at this point.) My first attempt at repair was to squish the cog tighter onto its shaft with a pair of needle nose pliers, this work for 99.9km at which point it stopped again. My final solution was to drill a 1/16th inch hole between the teeth of the cog right through to the shaft. I then dropped in some thin cyanoacrylate glue (get it from a modle store, or try crazy glue) the thin glue seeps between tyhe cog nd the shaft thus making it stop slipping. Mine is an 83 so not identical but I hope that this helps. Nicholas

it just looks as if the right side of the gears are off the mechanism that hold it flush to the facia; it is loose on the right hand side facing the facia, but seems not to stay put when moved to the proper position.
or maybe its reverse, the left side should be away from the facia flush with the right side. |

Fixed!
none of the cogs were shorn and i did not need to remove the dial and facia plate. the main odo had "derailed" from its normal position, and I was able to jiggle it back into position. I expect that by resetting the trip odometer whilst the car was moving, the odo derailed rather than shearing the gear. a much easier fix. thanks for all the inputs from past posts on instrument cluster removal and odo-broken theories. |
