water pump reseal!

I have water leaking from my water pump....its coming right from where the base of the oil dip stick tube is at. i have never taken a water pump apart or sealed one for that matter. is this an easy task? and what parts do I need to take off to get to the pump?

There are several write ups on this....it's a five hour job.

One tricky bolt on the underside of the water pump. This is if you have the six cylinder.

I removed the radiator to give me extra room and to make it easier to flush.

I have done this job on two different cars.... both a 3.0....but a 2.6 would be the same...

I would think that if you had a 4 banger it might be easier...

Once the water pump leaks...it's done.....

... meaning there's no "resealing."

You'll fit a new one.

Ismalley, purchase a reconditioned water pump from your local MB dealer.

dammit! well there goes that theory. I'm not gonna be able to do the water pump myself, so I'm not gonna even bother. I'll see if I can order the part and have a mechanic do it.

this is an important step for a diy-er...

you can do it...

otherwise you are looking at 600 out of pocket instead of 150

If this car is your daily driver and you need it to get to work and such, then maybe it would be better off giving it to a trusted mechanic for the weekend?

It is possible to do, I personally have not done it myself yet, but from all the posts I have read regarding this job, I think I could take it on.

With that said, we can help you out, there are many posts and instructables written up that are all over this Tech Help part of the forum.

Your choice, do what you will feel comfortable with.

yeah, I drive this car daily and I work mon-fri 7am-6pm and I would not have the time to take everything apart and change it all out because I'm sure that in the process I will end up breaking something else, so I'd rather just pay the money to have it done right. better to pay $500-$600 for the pump than $1600-$1700 for the pump plus whatever I break along the way :-). Thanks for the positive feedback

Changing the water pump, although daunting is a very logical step by step process. If you can weild a spanner and have a socket set and set of spanners you can do this job.

The hardest bit is getting the fan clutch off - if you haven't done it before.

Same here, at least on the M103 6-cylinder the water pump job is time consuming but otherwise not too difficult. Some things you'll need:

1. Tools for removing the fan clutch (short 8mm allen head, pulley holding rod)
2. 13mm short socket and some U-joints (or there's a Snap-On swivel socket on a long extension that makes this real easy), unless yours is secured with allen bolts.
3. Short coolant hose between the thermostat housing and the head (might as well replace it while you're in there, it's a PITA to get out otherwise)
4. Be prepared to replace the belt tensioner, they often don't re-tension if they have been in the car for a few years.

Even if you have to buy everything above, you still come out ahead about $400 or so from taking it to the mechanic.

More than that since it would be 6hours labor + the pump.
