Electrical?????????

89 300TE The other day the A/C would turn on and off, radio would turn on and off and radar detected would turn on and off. Checked alternator output and it was less than 11amps, put a new alternator in today (battery replaced 4months ago)car started, then engine would lightly surge and calm down, abs light and srs light would not shut off, engine died and will not start!!!!!!!!!!!
Any ideas?????????????

where is the ovp relay?

Merkey 07-26-2010 05:31 PM

Behind the battery, relay with a red top... fuse is in the top of it.

Now it has to be something in the blower motor, start the car run for a short time and the A/C blower starts and stops, the tach is bouncing all over the place, the turn signals are very weak, battery and alternator are new, ovp relay fuses are good, at a loss

check the positive battery cable and see if the aux wire is loose.common problem when battery replaced.

Replace the OVP relay.

could it be the Klima relay or the ovp when ever I put a loud on the engine it bogs down, load like turning the blower on or the headlights or the radio

mpolli 07-27-2010 12:33 AM

Do a search on OVP. I don't have one so I don't have personal experience, but it can cause symptoms like that.

david s poole 07-27-2010 11:11 AM

what is the battery voltage with and without engine running?

kchemers 07-27-2010 03:38 PM

batt is fully charged now. has 13.05 when engine is off and running down to 12.24 when engine is on and no loads. I tried to get the relay to jump and activate myself by trying to power up the relay out of the car. when i test to see if the relay is getting power in the car terminals 15 and 30 both have batt voltage when key is turned on....shouldnt that mean the relay should close? I also have batt voltage running to the alternator shouldnt it be putting out power then too. I'm at a loss this thing is not as simple as an american car of its time.

david s poole 07-27-2010 04:49 PM

based on what you just said your brand new alternator is not charging.you said 13.05volts with engine off and 12.24 with engine running.the voltage is supposed to go up when you start the engine.are you sure that the serpentine belt is tight around the alternator pulley?

kchemers 07-27-2010 05:27 PM

yes the alternator is also brand new just put in. I feel like something is preventing the alternator from powering up and charging.

kchemers 07-27-2010 06:05 PM

how many of u have gotten more than 1 bad alternator?

david s poole 07-27-2010 07:04 PM

there are two wires at least going to alternator.one large diameter and one very small [blue i think].the small one is the exciter wire and carries 12volts to the alternator when you start the car.it goes thru the batt idiot light on the dash.when you turn on key the batt light should be on because the terminal it connects to on alternator is ground when engine not turning it is carrying 12v to the alt.when you crank car engine it excites the windings and alt makes power.turn on key and see if batt light comes on,if not 1.bulb is blown,2.wire is not connected to alt,3.faulty alt.

Thank you Mr Poole for the help! took the band new rebuilt Mexican Bosch alternator back and it failed the bench test, will have another new rebuilt Mexican Bosch alternator tomorrow

mpolli 07-27-2010 10:14 PM

I read once that 10% of rebuilt parts are bad, and that has been about accurate in my experience. And 100% of Philippino radiators...

"Mexican, Rebuilt Bosch Alternator"

When translated means:
"Spray (With New Silver Paint) and Pray" (that it doesn't Bounce/ReTurn)

You may go through more than 5 with no resolution in sight.ESPECIALLY if
buying from AZ,Etc.

Before you hang the New reman ,make them "Load Test" it.(For Amperage).

mpolli 07-28-2010 03:13 PM

It probably only needed a regulator/brushes anyway. I have found Beck Arnley is pretty good for rebuild quality.

All that farting around for 2 days and it was the new rebuilt alternator, makes you wonder sometimes what the hell is going on!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for all the suggestions, I feel better that I wasn't the only one that didnt think of the alternator being bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

VW1300 08-06-2010 11:25 PM

+1 on the Mexican Bosch rebuilds - several years ago I went thru 3 rebuilt generators on my bug and never did get one that worked out of the box - eventually took a chance on a dusty, rusty old one which fortunately worked.
