Looking for insight into taking a auto trans. from my '81 300SD and installing it in my '83 300TD. I've been told if I change the tail shaft (going from elec speedo to gear) is all I need. I'm unsure. Anyone know??? Thanks! Dave

In a prior thread, Steve told me that you need a seal of some sort that isn't an easy thing to retrofit. But maybe that was installing a TD tranny in an SD.

It can be done because my 81 SD came to me with a 280E tranny and now it has a 300D tranny. I didn't swap tail housings, I got them that way.

Changing from manual speedo(rear cover & drive) to electronic isn't a big deal, just swaping the drive & rear cover, However going from electronic drive to manual can be a problem, as the manual speedo drive needs a lubrication port for the drive gears & the electronic trans isn't set-up for this lubrication port!
