I've had some bad ignition coils, and I've been diagnosing some engine ticking, so I've had to pull my current spark plugs too often. The washers are completely flat.

I read on Wikipedi@ that you can get replacement washers, but short of indexing washers, I can't find any replacement crush washer seals anywhere. Does anyone know if they exist, and where I can get them?

Ages ago when plugs became fouled (low voltage oils), it was common to pull the plugs and clean them every 5-10K. Garages had a little bench top sand blaster for it. And they were reinstalled with new washers.

Fast forward 60 years, new HEI (high energy ignition) and cleaner engines makes it hard to tell plugs with 100K from new ones. Since they last so long, you just replace them. No need for washers any more.

That kills it. At least my plugs are only a buck 88.

Do SL500 plugs have washers?

I thought most Merc engines used tapered plugs in matching tapered seats in the head; ie plugs without washers.

Some one please correct me...........

I don't know about others, but for the M119 engine, yes, they are crush washers.

Know of a good washer replacement? I'm doing lots of frequent checks on my plugs while I do various top engine clean treatment experiments.

Correct ,but the older and all the vintage models are all with the washers .

Just pulled the plugs on my 96 SL500 and they have washers? BERU brand (made in france) 14F-8DU4. They are not tappered.I think they are the wrong plugs,it just dont seem right. I just pulled them to do a compression test cause I'm comming up on 260K. Some nut overtorqued the right bank.I had to use a 1/2" drive breaker bar with a 4' long pipe on it

Wow, 260K on an M119. That would make you like a wise sage or something.

Beru, Bosch, NGK, Champion, they all can be used. And, crush washer seals are the correct type for our engines.

Just curious, have you had any work done on your engine to get to 260K?

Yes, after you mentioned it, I checked around the site. I couldn't find any. And M14 washers are even more rate.

I'm probably better off getting indexing crush washers.

If you have any other source, do let me know.

It's funny. Years ago during college, I used to ride an old bike. Sometimes, when parking in a sketchy spot overnight, my friends and I would pull two spark plugs. Back then, we didn't really think much about the loss of seal. In time, I did install a secret fuel shutoff valve under the gas tank....

No major work done just did compression checks today all at 180psi,and vacum checks good at 18 " hg + 2" for 2400' above sea level =20"hg. car runs like a champ very fast and smooth just wont idle when hot
