Gushing transmission + home mechanic
1997 320 E ‘s transmission (722.6) is leaking copious amounts of ATF from the cable actuated lockout that is located immediately to the drivers side and slightly above the transmissions output shaft. Appears to be while parked, mostly.
The accordion bellow seal is in place around the cable and looks good, any other seals for this part? Only thing I notice other than the leak is that the plastic part between the transmission proper and the rubber bellows isn't exactly tight to the transmission. Is there by chance an o-ring between the two???? Fine points on whats there do not show on either my Mitchell or Benz manual for the transmission Leak occurred after the dealer removed and replaced that transmission to address an engine seal. Dealer waaay overfilled the transmission. I've since drained sump and converter and refilled with 7 l of Benz ATF-134 after replacing filter. Is this leaking transmission something I can tackle with the transmission in the car? Any words of wisdom? Kent |

do you have access to the dipstick tool to check the level with or are you relying on fill specs?it may still be overfull.i didn't see you say anything about driving issues.

If repair shop didn't disconnect the trans inter-lock cable from the brake pedal before disconnecting from trans THEY damaged that bellows!
That bellows is the only thing that seals the cable to the trans. The trans pan must be removed & the pin that holds the parking pawl must also be removed. Takes a good MB tech about 1.5-2 hrs to install new bellows.

Bingo, think you nailed it. I warmed up the tranny, checked temp with pyrometer, dipsticked it and adjsted volume..... and it poured out.
Benz has that bellows for less than $20. 6 quarts of fluid about $120, new filter $20... ditto gasket. OK so I drain the oil, drop the pan, remove the filter. How envolved is the change from there? Parts wise it looks like I would be into it for $200. What should a good MB shop charge? |

Here is what I would do
I surely would take it back to the shop that messed it up ASAP. Usually people stand behind their work.
