92 500sel W140 - DIY - front end bushings
My 92 500SEL has all the typical front end problems: Shimmy at 60mph, very loose to drive, tires wear out, slight wobble etc...
So I decided to order (of course from your fabulous part shop) front end bushings, wheel bearings, eng mounts, damper, tie rod ends, lwr control arm bushings, and steering rod. My hopes is that this will fix everything and make te car a bit stiffer. So my question: Is there any special tools (I have a fork to remove the tie rods) to complete this work? Any advice you have for me on this. If it helps, I have done this on a 300E before; the only thing I remember is that the control arm bushings had to be pressed out. Many thanks. Joel

I think you need a press.

My '93 500SEL has the front end shakes too...just out of curiosity, did yours improve with what you did?

RE: W140 500SEL front end shimmy
It sure did. The car also handled much better too.

Does this sound like what might be wrong with mine?
Greetings! I am in the same boat here (I think). Here are the details:
1. Shimmy/shake at around 55-65 MPH, but smooth up to 55 and (for the most part) after 65 MPH. 2. Tires were professionally balanced at independent MBZ mechanic who also tightened steering box 3. Verified new steering damper is still good Were these the same symptoms for you? If so, I think I will be ordering a kit for both sides on mine and solve the problem! I am about to take it into the dealer nearby my work but would rather not for time and mostly financial reasons. Thanks much, Steve

W140 Front lower bushing replacement
Have read all the threads I can find and it appears that there is no easy way for the DIY mechanic to really do this job. Has anyone had a successful experience at replacing the front lower control arm bushings w/o a press or a special MB tool. Read one thread from 2003 using a cable and radiator clamp but can't tell if that was to install the bushing or remove it. More concerned about the proper installation. Also understand the bushing needs to be oriented in a certain way? Thanks
