99 E320 Shutting Off

Earlier this year I posted about our 99 E320 shutting off and was advised to install a new crank position sensor. We finally bit the bullet and took:confused: it to Brumos MB in Jacksonville where they scanned it. We were told it was instead the mass air flow sensor so we had it replaced. Well that has not cured the problem and now the check engine light is on (it was not on before). We are looking at trading cars and would like to have the MB in good shape for max trade allowance. Any sure fire solutions to be offered??

Thanks,
Bobbo

If the check engine light is on, there will be a code available via the OBD-II port. Find what it is.

Do as you were previously instructed, replace the crank position sensor. It's not uncommon to replace several a week in the shop for the exact same problem you describe. More often than not, there won't be a code stored for it. It the date stamp shows it to be original, then it's already past due for failure.

I was not aware that a failing MAF sensor would cause the engine to "shut off". Run poorly, yes. I've had several that failed in different cars but none caused a power shut down.

Typicaly it won't. If the maf fails completely the car will run on the "limp home" maps.
