harmonic balancer

I was wondering if you would have to balance the harmonic balancer pieces if changing from one engine to the next, mine has spun and i have got one from another engine .

thanks

Usually these bits are matched to an engine - just like a tyre to a wheel.

To help answer your question please tell us your car type / engine etc etc.

(Welcome to the forum by the way)

These parts are off of an OM617 5 cylinder diesel in a 1985 300SD.
thanks for any help. I have searched but found nothing about balancing but lots about replacing.

Why do you ask?

You say you are going to replace the engine. That is usually necessary when the HB gets to spinning. The engine you buy or pull will have a HB pulley on it, and hopefully it will be in good shape. Most people on this Forum would recommend you leave it undisturbed.

I am not changing the engine, the crankshaft is fine I just want to put the harmonic balancer from the wreckers onto the engine in my car and was wondering if it needs to be balanced ?

thanks

Because it is rubber bonded to steel which is the feature that makes it a balancer, I don't think that any other balance is necessary. Be sure that the end of the crank is perfect and remember that those two dowel pins are not 180 degrees apart. One side is a little closer then the other and if you check the Forum under that subject you will find a number who of people found that out the hard way.
