My grandfathers 1990 Mazda 929 (3.0L V6) did this. It was a blown headgasket. Replaced it and it blew again.... stupid mechanic.

I did mine for about $200 for the gasket set and misc. minor parts that needed replacing along the way, add about $300 for the head to be reconditioned, and then factor in anywhere from 8-12 hours labour...
Do it yourself and you can save over the labour - $1000 or so

I only spent about 17 years or so as a Dealership level Mazda Guild Certified Journeymen Technician, in all of those years I never saw a 929 with a blown headgasket, I did repair several that had cracked cylinder heads however, I suspect that your granfathers 929 troubles are not over.

Where on the head or gasket does the oil get into the coolant? Between the cam oil feed ports and the cooling passages? I honestly want to know and I'm not trying to cast doubts.

I ask because I dont know of any place above the crank journals where oil pressure exceeds the coolant pressure. The cam feed ports are the only place I can imagine the difference but I am not savvy enough to know what the actual pressure at the ports is.
One possible source of oil contamination in a cooling system of a vehicle with a automatic transmission is the transmission oil cooler in the radiator, you would likely be looking at some seriously discolored transmission fluid [beige/tan/butterscotch] colored fluid if this was the case however.

NO, if the trans cooler goes out the trans fluid is pushed in to the cooling system as well, and you'll have pink coolant, no matter what color the coolant is, the coolant will then look like pepto-bismal. Seen it.

have you considered the fact that there is an engine coolant element inside the radiator, this helps to cool the engine or tranny, there is a possibility that the coolant element has rotted or corroded, and some oil is seeping into the engine coolant, this is just one possibility to look into.you may want to let the engine cool then remove one of the upper radiator hose try to siphon some engine coolant out,see kif there is and engine oil or tranny fluid in the radiator,is so its likley that the cooling element has a hole in it.

NO there isn't an engine oil cooler in the radiator, that's for the transmission. If the coolant was being contaminated by the transmission cooler you can just remove the pressure cap and check the tank.

Gilly you are the man, oil in the coolant is engine related, end of story. I agree. You can get coolant mixed up with winshield wiper fluid thats funny but not oil in coolant except from the engine (usually head gasket or head cracked which you have checked when having redone and surfaced).
