'88 300e-Water pump [HELP]

Okay,my 1988 Mercedes-Benz 300e is leaking water like crazy...I mean the second you pour it in-It's already gone.
Took it a local shop and they said it was the water pump.

That night I think I brought the wrong part online-Auxiliary water pump:W124/ W202 # is:001 835 13 64
For 4 photos of the above said part:
http://www.auctiva.com/hostedimages/showimage.aspx?gid=913627ℑ=370436392&images=370436392,370436370,370436405,370436434&formats=0,0,0,0& format=0

I got the part on eBay and the seller does not know...So,is this the right part?-If not can anyone point me in the right direction for a cheap water pump?

So That's my first question.

2nd:
I have just put in a order for the Haynes
Service & Repair Manual Book-But,I can't wait 'till it gets here so does anyone know of any diagrams/manuals for this job?

I plan on buying the part and having someone put it in.
The shop wanted me to pay over $600.-And that was without the part.
I put an ad on craigslist 'taking bids' and got some good emails back.

...Anyway thanks:eek:

yep... that's the cost of a water pump...... it takes about 5 hours to do it...and a lot of patience...

so if you can buy one for 150.. plus another 15 for a certain swivel...you can do it...

Look under Resources at the top right and there should be a DIY link on how to change out the waterpump. The trickiest part may be getting the fan clutch off because you have very little room and need to hold the pulley from a hole in the back of it. Once you do that, it is only two bolts to take it out and put it in. A local repair shop wanted to charge me $800.00 just in labor to do it (based on Mercedes procedure recommendation). I did it for the cost of the water pump and a few hoses.

Here's the DIY Link:

The only one I could find there was a water pump replacement for a 1991 300se-Would this work?

Yeah, the price just seems crazy.-How long did it take you?
The same shop sent me an email via
craigslist saying they would do it for $300-That's not with the part.(shows how legit the shop is.)

Also,from looking at: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/DoItYourSelf
Looks like I did buy the wrong part.

Yes. Is a M103 engine. Very similar give or take a few wires and tubes. Mine's a 104 and I did it looking at those pictures. As a matter of fact, I just finished replacing my fuel accumulator which took about 15 minutes after looking at the forum's advice and pictures. Mechanic wanted $300.00 plus part $190.00. I got it online for $85.00. Now my car starts on the first crank even after being cold. Are you sure it's the water pump? These things are suppose to last forever. I was losing coolant out of a bottom water hose that coroded at the connection and was leaking and burning up on the manifold so no evidence just a disappearing act. I cut it shorter, tightened it up. Haven't lost any since.

Good.
Then at least I have: http://www.peachparts.com/Wikka/M103WaterPump
I am not 100% sure it is the water pump...That's just what the shop told me. I took a look under the car but,the leak seems to be coming from the middle of the car...Hard to get a good view.
Truth be told I have just lately been getting my hands dirty-When it comes to working on the car.:)

If it is literally pouring out and its not from the thermostat housing or any of the coolant hoses from the radiator, then its the water pump. Period.

Easiest way to double check this...

Remove thermostat housing, pour coolant directly into WP. Watch where it escapes. This removes head gasket and any other possibility. Even if it is the block->pump gasket, it is coming off and you need to replace the water pump. At least you should because of the time involved.

Replacing the water pump on a M103 is a straight forward, logical procedure. If you have never done it before it can take you up to 8+hours.
The Wiki is a bit brief.
You need to:
(a) Remove upper radiator hose.
(b) Undo fan shroud and move it out of the away
(c) Remove lower radiator hose.
(d) Remove fan and fan Clutch
(e) Loosen the bolts on the fan clutch, water pump and steering pump pulleys. Do this while the Belt is tensioned it will help to get a grip on the bolts on the pulleys if they are stubborn.
(f) Loosen the tensioner at the 19mm bolt
(g) Undo the tensioner adjustment 13mm bolt
(h) Remove serpentine belt.
(j) remove fan clutch pulley,
(k) remove steering pump pulley,
(m) remove water pump pulley,
(n) remove the Y bracket
(p) Remove the Belt tensioner shocker
(q) Remove the belt tensioner.
(r) Remove tube to water pump that feeds the heater.
(s) Remove the water pump.

The steering pump will be moved out of the way to enable access to the water pump.
Get a new pump and reinstall everything in order.
Replace the small radiator hose between the pump and head.
There is a small O ring between the pump and engine block.

Allow - just in case - for a new serpentine belt and belt tensioner.

KKelleman, recommend buying a reconditioned water pump from your local MB dealer. The Parts Department will ask for the VIN to ensure they sell you the proper water pump for your 1988 300E.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but it may be in your best interest to procure new mounting bolts, as well.

I'm half way through this job, or so I thought. I have a few questions. Car in question is 1992 330E 2.6. I've removed all the neccessary hoses, fan clutch, loosened tensioner 19mm and 13m bolt, removed serpentine belt. I have also removed the 2 rear bolts in the waterpump and the waterpump pulley.

I haven't removed the fan clutch pulley or power steering pulley. Any tricks for that since I have already removed the serpentine belt?

Which bolts do I remove to actually move the power steering pump out of the way besides the one for the pulleys.(started to remove the front 4 and power steering fluid started leaking)

There is also an allen key bolt in the front of the pulley. What size is it?

I did visit he DIY section, but some of the descriptions were a bit vauge. Pics would be very helpful, if not. Please be very descriptive. All help is appreciated.

lee polowczuk 09-22-2010 06:22 PM

pulleys---- strap wrench...

pump---- the answer is somewhere on here...it's probably the two that you didn't loosen...

dablk1 09-22-2010 06:41 PM

I actually figured out everything as I was going along since my last post; except for the size of that one allen bolt on the front of the water pump. I have evrything removed except for the water pump it self.

dablk1 09-22-2010 08:55 PM

It's a 6mm for future reference.
