"Check Engine" light on; part II; Update

Because this really goes into a new area i started a new thread. The fact the battery being changed shuts down so many things and the fact most techs do not reboot those items is a little weird. These items almost do not need to be monitored in reality because you don't have to have the computer tell you the seat does not adjust it not adjusting tells you that. However, it does open a box on what should be rebooted and hence the new thread-L

My last post in the original thread was:

I decided I would spend the money and take it to my MB private shop (since 1994.) rather than wing it in ignorance.
That was a good thing as it turns out
He used a dedicated laptop hooked to a big portable box which I am betting was not from Amazon.com LOL

Anyway, he starts noticing a few things and says:
"The battery was replaced"

I said yes, by the dealer and he said they never reset a bunch of stuff and most do not except for things like the windows and typical stuff people would miss but as an example the left front door module reads an open or shorted circuit. yet the items mentioned work fine just were not reset for the computer to monitor them.
It does know know if the wipers can operate (They operate fine)
A few other things like that which do not actually affect operation just the computer to monitor said operation.
He said this is common because of the extra time the techs just ignore them. If they stop working you don't really need the computer to tell you sort of stuff.
Not right but.

Anyway, the check engine light on thingy was (Not on the code list BTW):

P2075-002: Purge control system has a slight leak (Minor leak): Leak in hose connection or shutoff valve of activated charcoal canister (P0456) and
P2026-004 Y58/1 (Purge control valve) Open circuit/switchover valve permanently closed (P0444)
(I just love the notation "slight leak", the fact the computer knows the difference is very cool, IMO)

He said the other stuff the dealer ignored does not really matter but he will gladly take my money if I want it done.

I did want the Purge control taken care of and that will be done Tuesday.

I still ordered that scanner from Amazon and will see what it said when I plug it in and compare it to the print out (he also DLed all his data to my USB drive so i can save it to my E320 file)

Must be a 2001 or LATER car?

The most likely issue is the purge valve Y58/1.
Can cause all 3 of the listed codes.

You can send me a PM or e-mail if you would like a listing of those MB check engine codes.

They operate via WIS procedures and the stuff you mention is all that's called for when changing a battery.

Methinks your "indie" is full of hype as it's pretty typical of them to badmouth dealers to prove to you how cheaper is better.

It is a 2004 E320.

As for bad mouthing here is what the read out states.
The wipers do not work, the driver's seat does not work, the mirrors do not work, the brake lights, back up lights and turn signal's do not work and other such items. All according to the read out check.

Yet, everyone of these items works fine.

He had no prior knowledge of the car until he plugged in his reader.
As he started reading it he stated, "The battery has been replaced" and I said yes, by the dealer.
He then told me they did not properly reboot the computer after putting in the battery except for the things that would not actually work and that was typical of techs because those things will work whether the computer thinks so or not.
He was explaining what was required and what I did not need to bother paying him for but it was my choice.

As for the A-B service when I asked him what he would charge he laughed and said the A was an oil change I can do myself and most of the B was also just looking at stuff and not worth it. Even the flush of the injectors could be avoided with occasional dropping in a bottle of good FI cleaner.

I will not put 3K a year on this car and do want to maintain it as well as is reasonable.
$240.00 for an oil change and checking my fluid levels, rotating my tires and dropping a bottle of injector cleaner is not, IMO, reasonable

$540.00 for the B is even less reasonable but I bought a 2004 because I don't have the money some here have and by all means if you have extra $ why not feel better about giving extra to the dealer for peace of mind.

My tech will do that valve tomorrow. he asked me to leave it and is giving me his personal car to drive for the day.
I will let you know what he did, said and what it cost me and appreciate the second opinions which I may not always agree with but am grateful for as I know you make them with good faith

MANY times systems are scanned & there codes present.
How long have they been there?
Do they (codes) mean anything?

In most cases the codes mean nothing.

That is why many shops make BAD diagnosis, they think that
any code is most likely a problem & 95% of the time they aren't.

Oil changes are simple on that car & you can save $$$ by doing them yourself!

What is so funny is how close you are to how my independent tech explained all this to me.

Sometimes great minds travel the same path.
