fast idel 500 SEL

I have 500 SEL 1984 recently at start up it is taking a little longer to turn over (6-8 Seconds) additionally intermittently it will go from idling its normal 600 RPM to 1500-1600 RPM and will not kick down. The engine is spotless all linkage is clean and working properly. No major changes have been done to the engine to cause this to happen. Does anyone have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

Check out what Steve Brotherton and Benzmac have to say in this thread. Can't say it lines up with your situation, but it's worth looking at.

Check the throttle body switch. I suspect that it is not closing when the throttle is in the idle position. If this switch is not closed, the idle control unit will not work at all.

Your overvoltage protection relay may be shot, or the fuse in it may be gone. This can cause a fast idle.
