I want to be sure I'm getting the correct parts. It looks like I need:
cross member - 126-610-01-14 transmission mount - 116-240-04-18 flex disk kit - 126-410-04-15 I know what the cross member is, it's the thing you should NOT lift the car by! I'm not too clear on the trans mount and really unclear about the flex disk. I've listed the part numbers I found (for my 1989 560 SEL). If someone has the time to check my part numbers, I would appreciate it. Also, can one of you geniuses explain what the flex disk looks like? After I'm done, or if I get stuck, I'm going to have Ben's Workshop check the alignment of the drive shaft, etc., etc. Thanks! Scott |

The transmission mount is a rubber/steel unit which bolts to both the cross member and the tailshaft housing of the transmission, it secures the tranny to the frame. The flex disk should be easy to spot, by your description of things, it should be the black round rubber piece which is rubbing on the tunnel. Found as the union between the transmission yoke and the front yoke of the driveshaft.
Hope this helps.

If not sure about part number call Phil
Greetings,
Give Phil a call at part shop listed on this site. If you aren't sure of the name of the part, Phil will shoot you a pic of that area of the car so you can see the break down and decide which parts you may need. He is a lot of help in narrowing down the required parts for the job. Keep up the Great work Phil. If you need any workshop pages emailed for any of these procedures, let me know. Will be more than happy to email them to you. I will need you to send me your email address as the files are generally large. Charles

Well shoot! I ordered the parts, had them shipped overnight and got two out of three right, but guess which one was wrong... The "transmission cross member plate", the darn thing I bent to start with!!! I called MercedesShop, but they are closed for the holidays; I left a message. I need help identifying the correct part. The Transmission Mount (116-240-04-18) connects directly to the transmission with one 17mm (or 19mm) nut. The other end of the trans mount connects to a plate with two 13mm bolts and that plate attaches to the body with four 17mm bolts. It's the plate I need which has been referred to as the "transmission cross member". I ordered a cross member (126-610-01-14) and it is way wrong -- I believe it mounts somewhere in the rear. Anybody know another name for the plate I need? I need one yesterday (of course). I'll try and get a picture of the plate and post it.
Thanks again, Scott "jack up the car anywhere" Anderson. |

I have the Mercedes parts catalog and finally got it running on my NT workstation. The part I need is called an Engine Support - Rear, Part #126-242-06-01. I've checked 3 parts places, thebenzbin.com, mercedesshop.com and newmercedesparts.com, but cannot find it. If my Austin, Texas Mercedes dealer parts dept. is open tomorrow (doubtful) I'll see if they have it. If anybody knows where else to look, please let me know.
Thanks for all the help! Scott "Everything you wanted to know about lifting a Mercedes with a floor jack, but was afraid to ask" Anderson. |

Bent tranny support?
Be sure and carefully inspect the car body where the tranny support attaches. It is not designed to support the weight of the car and may be bent upward as well. If so, judicious application of a 'post maul' from inside the car can straighten it out.
You MUST get the rear of the transmission back down to the proper height to avoid driveline vibration. You might have to use spacer shims (self fabricated) and washers under the cross-member bolts to achieve this. |

I was able to bend the floor back close enough to put the rear engine support bracked back on. I was going to replace the flex disc because I got a little torn up. Do I have to remove the drive shaft (job #41-050) to R&R the flex disc? Thanks, mscotta

You should not have to completely remove it but you will want to get it where you can move it back far enough to replace the flex disc. I am speaking from the way my E320 is built but I am thinking it should be the same way. Look in front of your center bearing for a big ol nut. Loosen it up and this will allow you to "compress" the drive shaft from the front flex disc toward the support bearing enough to replace the flex disc. Make SURE you mark the orientation of the drive shaft in relation to the position of the disc on the back of the tranny that the flex disc bolts to. You want to put everything back the same way. Also, the book recommends that you use new bolts/nuts when replacing the flex disc. Torque everything to spec.

Are you going on the assumption that the carrier bearing assembly is okay or are you replacing that as well for good measure?

The "big ol nut" engatwork referred to; do I have to drop the exhaust to get to the center bearing? (Not too sure I know what it looks like, but will try putting a floor jact under it and see if I can bend the Hell out of it too!!) I am replacing the flex disc mainly because it looks torn up on the outside. Most of the outer rubber is gone and I can see the steel plates inside the flex disc. I also worry about some vibration since the rubber wore differently in different spots. Another reason is because I already bought one! Although... It appears to be working fine and I feel no vibration at 80+ mph. Whatcha think, to replace or not to replace, that is the question? Thanks, Scott "I can't believe I got it back together" Anderson

The center bearing hides under (or over in this case) the tunnel cover, a large plate bolted to the pan with a bunch of 13mm bolts (with two hidden on the back face by the differential). You may have enough room to snake the cover plate off to the sdie without droppibg the exhaust, but not sure there is room to get at the nut.
Let us know if this plate can carry the weight of the car
