300e Rear end humming noise

First off, Im proud to say that I succesfully drove my car from Cleveland to manhatten without ANY incident. (465 miles each way)

Also, I averaged what I thought to be stellar gas miliage at 25 mpg!

However, towards the end of my trip, I started to notice a bit of a humming noise coming from the rear end of my car.

Logic tells me its either the diff, or a wheel bearing. Is there any way to check what went amiss without doing major surgery?

Did you check the level of gear lube?

Take a look underneath and make sure it isn't a flex disc starting to fail- especially under load.

I'm sitting in San Diego as I type this- 1500 miles away from home and I just got my car back it did the exact same thing- except it failed on the highway and almost dropped the driveshaft. Had to pull over and find a shop.
