300TE 124 Head Gasket
The head gasket on my 1992 124 300TE is acting more and more like the British rust proofing system and is time for the change. I have found some good info on the site but have a few questions. 1) What would be the best manual aside from the official Mercedes Books IE Bentley, Hayes, Chilton etc. or a CD ROM?
2) Do I: clean both surfaces well and put it back together, machine the face or the full enchilada of a rebuild. I opt for the first for now. The weathers getting cold in New England and my work shop is colder. The spring my bring the rebuild, but for now... Thanks Ric Doucette

I have a 94 E320 wagon (104.992 engine) with about 190,000 miles. I recently did the cylinder head project--the whole enchilada drill as you described. The machine shop that rebuilt the head commented that nothing was out of spec. Guides, lifters, cams--everything was good. They said it had a very slight warp which was corrected by resurfacing. They also cleaned it, (lots of carbon build up) reseated the valves and put new seals in. I bolted it all back together and it runs great. The machine shop bill was $340.00.
If I had it to do over, I would probably do the "whole enchilada drill" again although I'm not sure it is really necessary. I plan to keep driving this car for many years so that probably influenced my decision. I'm sure if I hadn't done the rebuild I would constantly wonder if I should have.....

It depends on the mileage. JMS did it at 190K, and was mildly surprised how good a shape it was in, and how inexpensive the reconditioning was. If you have low miles you can probably forego the reconditioning. At the very least, get a straight edge and check the faces for flatness once the head is off.

if you pull the head and don't send it to a machine shop to have it reworked it's like going to the doc for a check up and doing an about face at the door as you tell yourself "i must be okay because i made it here" if you go to that much trouble fix it right.

Old thread, but I too have a 92 300te in new England and am prepping to do this fix.. Did you go through with it?
