HELP !!!! distributor, timing issue ?????
OK....here's the story....my wife hid my laptop charger a few days ago and to retaliate, I unplugged the main coil to the distributor. I was laughing this morning when she got in her car and cranked it up but it didn't start ..hahaha...so she ended up walking to work (four blocks away). So I got my charger back and I was happy to plug the main coil and get her car going again.....well, joke's on me !!! I thought I would just be able to reconnect the main coil wire and the car would start, but Nooooooo ..... I can't get the car started now. I have already tried manually setting the pistons to TDC and adjusting the distributor rotor so it is aligned with the #1 spark plug...still no start ...I guess I am a victim of my own stupidity, but I'm sure that there is someone out there that can help me get out of this jam.....HELP before my wife beats me for being an idiot

After reconnecting the coil wire the engine should have started normally. Suspect that in the process of removing the coil wire the connector loosened. Check the end of the coil wire, and be sure it's fully seated in the distributor cap. There should be no need to adjust the timing.

yeah..that's what I thought too, but the connection seems to be fine. I mean I push it down all the way and there is metal to metal contact.

Doesnt mean the wire was good and you didnt sperate it inside. Also poor distributor parts getting yanked on could have made them fall apart. You may have to clean and replace the caps and coil if they were old, and the coil wire.

hmmm...ok. I will check it. I cleaned the points, even though they looked pretty clean. Maybe it is just the coil wire.

What do you mean by "I cleaned the points"? If that means you cleaned the terminals inside the distributor cap you may have left dirt particles inside the cap that causes arcing inside the cap. It's also possible that the distributor cap is cracked/damaged. If you haven't replaced the distributor cap & rotor in the last 60,000 miles you might want consider it now.
Have you verified that the coil is OK?

yes. the terminals. The cap is clean on the inside. Cap is not cracked/damaged and the rotor was replaced last year even though it looked ok. I hooked up a spark plug to the coil and got no spark, so I think I will try replacing the coil.

You may have fried your(her) ignition system, cranking without the secondary coil being able to discharge may have caused back emf to the ignition circuit.
Just give her a wedgy next time, less chance of complications ;-) |

..... lol....the engine turns, then lets out what can best be described as a farting noise, the ncontinues to turn over until it lets out another farting noise !!!! I think it's coming from the carb, so i took the air filter cover off, but i can't tell cause I need to be looking at the engine....I can't believe this !!! I guess farting noises coming from a car that is trying to start can seem pretty funny if you think about it. So, does anyone have an idea what the hell happened????

There's no carb its fuel injection, and your ignition circuit is still probably fried. Not the coil but the ignition box that drives it.

You should have your head examined, why in the world would you move the distributor!

First of all...the problem cannot be the EZL unti since the ignition coil is grounded to protect the EZL unit from any overload from the coil. It would be stupid if Mercedes would not protect a $3,000 part by leaving it open to overload. Second, I don't think moving the distributor would cause me to not be able to reset at TDC and get the car started again. I need help not criticism or random out of left field thoughts. Anyways, the W126 manual CD states that the ignition coil can be tested while still connected which is esentially what happened by cranking the engine with the coil disconnected at the distributor housing. So....what happened?..lol
