1990 300ce 24valve . lpg conversion
I have a 1990 300ce 24v. which runs on lpg as well as petrol (gas). When I slow down fairly rapidly whilst running on lpg after having driven at speed the engine sometimes cuts out at about 20mph. I have removed the scoop on the air intake and this has slightly improved the situation. Any other ideas or experiences with this conversion. Apart from this problem the system is great and allows me to avoid expensive U.K. petrol prices.

Buy the January 2002 issue of Car Mechanics (UK magazine). There's a good article about this type of problem.
We've got a fleet of light vans running on LPG, and we've had our problems, but the driving characteristics are excellent. The fuel cost savings are excellent, but the environmental benefits are what swung the decision for us. |

I have had a few Jeremiahs tell me my valve seats will burn out and they find it hard to believe that the performance is still O.K. Thanks again to u both.

LPG does run hotter making the valve seats a little more vulnerable. Most manufacturers that do a factory fit gas system (LPG or CNG) will uprate the valve seats, but a modern engine built for unleaded probably will be OK anyway.
One big advantage on a wear front with LPG is the absence of bore wash. With petrol (gasoline) in a cold engine the fuel condenses on the cylinder walls, washes off the oil and dilutes the oil in the sump. With LPG there is no condensation, no wash, no oil dilution. Oil tends to stay clean for much longer. |

Hi Martin,
I have a 230te which I have had converted to lpg.So far so good and the cost savings are very good with little drop in performance. I had the same problem as you after a service as the air duct had been put back on,it could be that the diaphram has stretched giving a wrong mixture. The guy who did the conversion is very good compared to a lot of the people I spoke to so it might be worth giving him a call on 01934416611,he is always happy to help out.
