W126 transmissions...
1991 560 SEL. Going trans shopping. Which ones are compatible? I found an 89 from a 420 SEL at a euro shop for cheap. Should I scoop it up and get rebuilding or keep looking? Milage is 109,000. Price is less than $400.

Any of the 1986-95 V-8 powered transmissions will fit & work.

$400 seems high for a trans that claims to be 109k with no documentation... remember VDO odometers fail often in these vehicles.
For a rebuildable core, I would pay $100 max as so many are around in so many applications as MB Doc points out.

Well it may already be rebuilt. I have not called to get details on it yet. And its the best price I can find right now. But I do have some junkyards that are not on Car-part.com, so maybe I will have some luck there.

Well I would like to see it in person and transport it myself. But I am going to head over to a place that might have rebuilt crated ones I can get at cost. Probably not, but worth checking. And I have some yards to look at. Big thing right now is compatibility, but boy do I want a 5 speed or something with more efficient gearing.
I will update when I finally get something.

Gearing is not that bad, I have not driven my 560 in a while but I seem to remember cruise RPM @ 65mph around 2300. I guess you could source yourself the taller 2.24:1 diff to drop the RPM a few hundred.
The CIS not not great for fuel economy (all injectors fire at the same time...), nor are the two huge cats on the car, nor is the Y connector of the manifolds that forces the M117 to breathe through a straw. Starting in second gear around town does you no favor for economy either. How old is your O2? The older it becomes, the richer the car tends to run. If all your forward gears are fine, just replace the reverse clutches and reseal the unit while out of the car. You should easily get to 200k+ on the rest of the internals. One of mine is creeping up on 275k.
