suspension replacement parts for an '87 260E
 

I'm not really sure I am able to describe any specific "troubles" with the suspension, but it just seems too "soft" and to "float" a little too much and was wondering on a fifteen year old car what would you recommend replacing in the suspension?

It has new Bilstien comfort shocks, but everything else is original.

The comfort shocks might just be it.

Most people either use standard, heavy duty or sport shocks. comfort is usually too soft for most people.

If you hate a firm ride, sport is not for you, and HD might be too firm as well. standard OEM would be well of course factory ride.

If its bushings, or maybe sagging springs or something, then look into the sportline upgrade.

I just rebuilt the rear suspension on my '86 300E and with the Bilstien comfort shock the ride is very tight and firm. The car really hold on a tight corner.

I was of the impression there were only two grades of shocks, comfort and HD. Also, I was told not to mix shocks with the springs, use HD with HD springs. Depends which spring you have on the vehicle.

Check all the front-end parts. A bad Idler arm bushing would cause the center-link to move up and down changing the toe-in as you drive. Just a bad alignment (toe- out) would do the same. Take it to a good alignment shop and have them check it out. The easy shock test is to push down on the bumper.. if the car continues to bounce the shock is not doing it's job.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen! Thanks for the thread referral Craig, I'll start with those parts and see how it improves. I have no obvious alignment problem, it doesn't favor one side even under hard braking, and the shocks are fine too, so I'm good there. I will also go through the front end...and suggestions on replacement parts in the front?

I too thought the standard shock was the comfort shock? I just had the shop replace what was there originally, so this was an assumption. I'll check the receipt but am sure they are comforts.
