Yeah, I love mine too, it looks like it belonged there in the first place.

I mounted mine too just below the door handle.

Next time you order from www.griotsgarage.com, try the speed shine. I use it a lot in between washings, and it puts an incredible shine on the car. They also claims it has a little bit of wax in it, so you're also adding protection at the same time.

I ordered another one for the passenger door last week, and I'm hoping it'll arrive tomorrow (Monday).

for you guys who put the cupholder just under the door handle, how do you avoid the cup getting in the way when you go to open the door? or did you set it low enough under the door handle that your regular cup is not in the way?

I set it low enough so that If I have a regular soda can, or a regular size drink, it doesn't interfere with the opening of the door. If I have a large size drink, a snapple bottle, or anything taller, it get's in the way. You can attach it lower on the door to not interfere with the handle at all, but then it's so low that it may interfere with the full access of the storage pocket on the door. I put my cd holder right there, and it was important to me to have full access to slide it in and out real nicely.

I just pull the drink out before I open the door, return it to the holder, then close the door. The cup holder is spring activated so that it 'clings' to whatever you put it in. When you close the door, your drinks doesn't fall over.

Also, when you mount it with the four screws, use the screws they provide. They're not very long, but they don't need to be.

Almost the whole area is wood, and that 's what you screw into. Someone above mentioned sheet metal, but you're not screwing into sheet metal. I've had one liter water bottles in there and it's as stable as a rock.

I've taken the door panel off my 1987 560SL and there's no wood there, its just the cardboard-like material that comprises the door panel and of course the metal door shell....

thanks for your answer though, now I'm leaning towards getting one of these cupholders myself! If only I was sure the screws would hold it nice and tight to the door panel.

Wood, or some form of compressed wood product, it's still what your attaching it to, and it holds the weight of heavy drinks like a charm.

I think there is a greater philosophical issue at stake here than just cup holders

There once was a time when M-B engineers would not even grant you a driver's door electric window lift. They figured it was close enough to warrant a manual crank. Ditto for the drivers door mirror. And no reasonable autobahn pilot would attempt to drive and sip latte at the same time!

BTW i believe this is the exact same one. i haven't mounted mine yet as i wasn't sure i wanted to do anything permanent. i almost stuck it on top of the swing up armrest but still have not decided.

It sure looks like the same one.

I suppose you could mount it on top of the flip up armrest, but it sure would be an odd place to mount it. You'd also lose the regular function of the armrest. Where would you rest your arm?

It may fit inside the arm rest, but you'd have to measure. I know the $40.00 armrest available at the dealer will fit inside the armrest, but it's too expensive and not as good as this $15.00 model.

The second one I ordered didn't arrive today, but when It comes tomorrow, I'll have a look see.

Btw, I had one mounted on the floor between the seats in my Nissan Quest minivan and it worked like a charm. I held it in place with velcro on the side of the seat, and folded it up when I wasn't using it.

hardly ever use the armrest - is why i thought of it. won't fit inside though, already tried that. and it will look weird which is why i haven't done it. i may just put in on the door with double sided tape or should i just screw it in? in the miata application they use one screw plus tape. the less holes i have to drill, the better...

That is the same one, they lowered there price it was 19.95 when I ordered mine from Griots. The Miata mounting uses an existing screw and tape. I would not trust just tape.

That's a tweeter in my door. I replaced the door woofer with a set of '6 JL Audio separates (woofer and tweeter). I also replaced the dash speakers with Diamond Audio 4.5 in. coaxials.

Sound is amazing.
