High Speed Suspension Components

Next phase for my W124. Car is running very good. I have been taking it up to the higher MPH range and start experiencing a little roughness or what feels like speed wobbling. I have a '91 300E with new shocks, struts and steering damper. What do I need to replace next. at 80 MPH, it is smooth as silk...even 90. However....

Check your rear control arms for any play in the bushings. Check diff mounts as well for cracks.

Make sure your tires are in good shape....

A blowout at 145mph is not fun, and may stain your pants.

I'm not getting up to that speed! And yes, I may need a diaper for 145 mph!

they will do it, just need some space to let them spread their legs.

Have you replaced the idler arm bushings??

Pull the dust caps on the wheel brgs and check the adjustment.
I'd say control arm bushings isn't likely a problem. How are the swaybar bushings?

Control arm bushings are an issue on all W124's at some point. They usually cause inner tire wear on the rear and wandering on the freeway, especially under acceleration. It'll feel like the car is blowing away in the wind.

worn sway bar bushings only increase roll on turning.

sptt 11-13-2010 02:14 AM

It doesn't feel like it's blowing away in the wind. Just starts a little vibrating or very slight wobble. Tires are balanced and have lots of good tread. Back end is not swaying either. It is very tight but I can tell there is something that is worn out somewhere. Can't tell on visual inspection. 100MPH is still pretty good but I feel like it may get unstable above that.

perhaps go to a front end shop for diagnosis.

tyl604 11-13-2010 09:17 AM

Years ago I had that problem with my 6.3. Took it to a speed shop for a high speed on-car balance and it solved the problem. It purred at 125mph and drove smoothe as silk. Make sure you have high speed tires though.

Be careful. That car caused me to lose my license.

What are your tires rated at? Is there any water in them?

replace all four sway bar bushings,it will make a very nice difference and cheap to do.

sptt 11-14-2010 04:34 AM

I think that is what it is...high speed imbalance or bushings. Tires are top end Goodyears and new. I will try the swaybar bushings. Seems like it is something like that or the high speed balance thing. Thanks so much for the help as usual! Car is starting great (1st crank every time), purrs at idle in gear or out, and engine is strong and smooth like it should be with 190K.
