Antenna Grommet

I'm embarrassed to ask this question but I'm trying to replace the rubber grommet on the antenna on my 84 300D. It has whipped me all morning. There must be a trick to doing it. Just cant get it to go all the way in. Does anyone have any tricks for doing this? Better to try it from the bottom up or top down. Thanks for all replies.

Thanks,
Harry

Well I guess I must have a cheapo aftermarket antenna - I just unscrewed the top bit - cleaned it and re-assembled... but that doesn't help.

As a general rule rubber slides into holes better with lubrication. Use KY jelly as it won't eat the rubber like silicone.

Put it in warm water to make it a bit more pliable.

remove the antenna and install the grommet in the body of the car, then slide the antenna into the grommet.
