An ASR problem? I sure hope not...
Happy holidays to all and hope those of you in the US did not eat yourselves into a 'food coma' on Thanksgiving!
Well, just yesterday I was out and driving across the parking lot of Sam's Club when I came to a corner where there was some ice that had formed overnight. As I was making the curve and rolling through the icy patch the car very briefly slid sideways (I mean, VERY briefly). I'm sure you have probably had this happen - you hit a slick patch as you are turning and the car slides momentarily until it hits the dry pavement and then all is well again. I didn't think the first thing about it until I got back into the car to leave and as I got the car out on the road it seemed (and this is where I'm not real sure!) that I was hearing a slight "whine" coming from the rear end area! The noise is still there today. Is this a symptom of something going on with the anti-slip system on this car. Any suggestions or comments? Thanks...

Don't think so. It's more like a speed related 'roar' - sounds as if I have put an aggressive type winter tread on it...but haven't!

Is it a slight whine or a roar? Is it speed related?

It sounds more like snow tires on the car... but, as I have stated, I don't have...

Do you have any records of the differential fluid being replaced? You might want to start with that.

Good point. It's not been changed since I have had it - 15 months. It has been in for general service but has not been a suggested item. I just hit 90k miles yesterday on a trip so it should be done. Thanks.

I vote wheel bearing too. Sounds like it wasn't torqued in quite right and your sideways slide unseated it.
A remote possibility is the SLS valve. How's the rear riding? Get under there and check the SLS linkages and sway bar setup, make sure it's not bound up in some incorrect position. When the valve is in a position where it is partially open, it can make a hydraulic groaning sound. If you have a busted accumulator, the constant pressure bleed could be enough to keep the valve open slightly, generating this noise.

I am waiting for a call from my indy to schedule it in for a 'look/see'. This is simply a job I will not take on as I just don't have the time for the car to be down as long as it is sure to take! Any idea what I am likely to spend for this, assuming it is a bearing? Not a good time for a sizable repair bill I must say since tires were on my to-do list as well as a trip to FL over Christmas! Oh well...sometimes you are the bug, sometimes the windshield!
