1992 500SEL Head Gasket

All-

Looking for advice on replacing the head gasket on a 1992 500SEL. Is this a DIY? Have done this in cat deisels, Porsche and Land Rover. Not sure if there is something special requiring dealer only sort of work/tools.

Thanks

You'll be taking the camshaft sprockets off, or at least the timing chain, so be prepared for putting all that back together. Apart from that, if you're replacing it because the gasket's blown and you have coolant in the crankcase, it might become quite a big clean-up project. You might want to get a copy of the Mitchell's or ALLDATA repair/replacement procedure before you go any further. That will give you a good indication of the extent of the project.

if u havent tore the head apart yet, try black pepper, and a new ceramic sealant to dump in the rad coolant for re-sealing blocks.
if u do blk pep make sure u bypass the heater core so no water run in there, if u mess/plug that up, is not going to be happy too.

I have done many 6 cyl, 5 cyl dsl with these tricks.
